Can not install TiMidity

Post by digiday »

Hi ScummVM-ers,

I am posting on this forum after finding the ScummVM forum via a Google search while looking for information about TiMidity... I thought someone, or anyone here may be an expert about things that have to do with TiMidity.

I have downloaded the newest version of TiMidity that I can find, version 2.13.2, but it is dated 3/01/2004, and after looking at the files and reading the "SETUP.txt" file which is the "TiMidity++ Installation guide" I can't quite figure out where to get all of the necessary files to make TiMidity work.

The very first URL that is provided in this installation guide is one of the URLs to download a necessary file... but http://www.stardate.bc.ca/eawpatches/html/default.htm is a dead URL, so it seems that it would be nearly impossible to configure TiMidity without this first necessary "Eawpatch" file.

There is an email address included in this installation guide <iz@onicos.co.jp> but it is to a Japanese email address so I'm not sure how successful I would be at getting any advice from the person who wrote this installation guide to begin with, especially since it seems that one must find so many files from across the internet to make TiMidity run.

Based on experience, can someone out there tell me how to make Timidity work and how to gather the necessary files to make it work... or better yet, is there a way that I could somehow get the files from someone out there that may have already gathered them to make TiMidity run?

All I'm trying to do is to use TiMidity to convert MIDI files to another audio format that can be edited in Audacity.

I'd sure appreciate it...

Thanks,

digiday

I don't know much about TiMidity myself. I do know that it needs either a set of "Gravis Ultrasound compatible patch files" (such as the apparently defunct "eawpats", or the probably less complete "freepats") or - at least if you use TiMidity++ - a SoundFont. Possibly, it can be configured to use a combination of the two. Unfortunately, neither the TiMidity++ nor the freepats project seem to be particularly active any more.

There's also FluidSynth, which uses SoundFonts only. I don't know which of the two is the best though, or if there are better alternatives.

Thanks eric,

but that doesn't advance my cause very much... I'm starting to figure that one needs to be a programmer to use TiMidity... that is if one can salvage old files that are no longer available in Internetville, maybe from a codewriter's salvage dump somewhere in the the Webland junk yard.

I need to use TiMidity for MiDidity.

Hi Red_Breast... my 4th wife had red breasts, after vacationing in Burnville, AK, or was it Burnville, NC (both real places).

Somewhere in the unbelievable dissertation of information on that sourceforge.net page link that you provided me, I saw the word "compile"... and I saw the phrase, "Porting to a virgin platform"... isn't that every man's desire, to "Port to a virgin platform".

If "compile" refers to compiling or writing code, then I probably won't get very much help from that page... I know just enough HTML to edit a webpage after creating it in Dreamweaver, but otherwise the only code that I have experience with is reading about the code that the Germans used in WWII.

I do see that erik-bjorn-borg added something to his post later as an afterthought about "FluidSynth"... I will resist making the obvious pun about that one... I'll check out "FluidSynth" erik-bjorn-borg... I loved watching you play tennis.

Oh, MiDidity is what will happen if I get MIDI edited in TiMidity, if I ever get past the RiGidity of the installation process of TiMidity.

Thanks ReDidity

I do love to see some humour in posts however I'm sorry to disappoint you - my name is a nickname I've had since I can remember and even before that. My real name is Robin you see.

If you have any experience of Linux I could point you to a sort of compiling ScummVM for dummies post I made on the Residual forums. (Residual is a sort of 'sister' to ScummVM - hmm maybe I should find a better word than sister regarding one or two things you said in your last post. You've got me going now!)
Even though the compiling method is different it might be a start.
All the best and thanks for the humorous post.

By the way it's an easy mistake to make but I only know a little HTML. Probably less than you. Just enough for forums. But you don't need to understand code to compile.

Robin Red Breast

Hi Robin Red Breast,

Why would I be disappointed?... I love smart girls... or are you more like Robin Williams?

Funny, I have a name that can be used for either gender too, but I won't divulge that it is Susan... oops, psych.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't have any experience with Linux, except hearing of it... "♫♫ Girl, you really got me now... ♫♫"

I like speaking in code sometimes... cryptic humor and all that.

A friend has supplied me with a current download list that is guaranteed to provide me with all of the needed odds and ends to make TiMidity work... do you have TiMidity installed and working?... I can only imagine how you must look at your computer... compiling code can be so sexy.

And that wasn't really my 4th wife that got the torso burn... it was my 5th... not really, 0 wives for me, so far.

I'll let you know how I do with TiMidity if I ever get it working.

Don't break too many digital hearts,

PS: Love your photo... is that a recent portrait?

Success with TiMidity - You Really Got Me Now

Post by digiday »

Hi Robin Red Breast,

I've finally had success with installing TiMidity and making it work... now I've got it fine tuned down to an assembly line process of finding silly/fun MIDI song files on a great site at... http://rock.mididb.com/ downloading the tiny MIDI files, converting them in a few seconds to WAV format, which can then be converted to MP3 files in Audacity.

After your comment, "You've got me going now!" and I said... "♫♫ Girl, you really got me now... ♫♫"... I decided to find that song, in MIDI of course, and convert it and post it on an audio file serving website, at this link... http://toofiles.com/a/200556.html

This file went from a 19.2 KB MIDI file downloaded from that first URL above, then to a 21.3 MB WAV file converted in TiMidity, then to a 2.4 MB MP3 file converted through Audacity, then uploaded to TooFiles.com at the link above for you to listen to and download to keep if you want.

These MIDI files from the web are so perfectly cheesy that they're funny and one can find just about any song that's a favorite... then by converting it to an editable file for Audacity, I can make clips of these little ditties and use them for videos that I'm working on or use them as email alert sound clips in WAV format.

I hope you like this dumb little number, reminiscent of the Kinks in 1964 and Van Halen in 1978, only much funnier.

Enjoy, Robin Red Breast,

Sorry to disappoint you (maybe) but it's more Robin Williams.
I was tempted to run with it a bit though at first.
The picture has some characters from the game Maniac Mansion (SCUMM - Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) although it's not an in-game shot.

Okay Robin Red Breast,

"You REALLY got me now"... ar ar... you ran with it a little and I tagged along for the chat room ride.

(If you want to see a very good and strange movie about other chat room encounters gone bad, see the movie, "Hard Candy" with Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Candy_%28film%29 )

That's funny (I guess)... it's like my own personal crying game (another strange movie)... okay, retract all that stuff about how you look sitting at your computer, though I'm sure that you look fine, that's just not my cup of tea... "not that there's anything wrong with that"... (Seinfeld reference).

I live in San Francisco, so I'm exposed to plenty of "altenative lifestyle" stuff, but I'm an old fashioned, well, "SSWM" (straight single white male).

That's okay, I like Robin Williams, just not THAT way.

Well, enjoy the song anyway and the MIDI song file database if you were interested.

An interesting side note that your description of your avatar image reminded me of... "SCUM" is also a famous acronym for "The Society to Cut Up Men"... written by a nut-job named Valerie Solanas in 1968... "The SCUM Manifesto" was a 31 page radical feminist "book" written by Solanas.

Solanas was basically a man hating prostitute and panhandler in Greenwich Village, New York City.

She was a radical feminist gone mad from her years on the street, being battered by men who were her Johns in New York City, odd since she was a radical feminist lesbian.

She wrote this little "satirical literary device", as she later called it, during the time that she was hanging out at "The Factory", Andy Warhol's art studio, general hang-out and flop house for the dejected, the famous, the infamous, and the famous and infamous wannabes of the time in New York City.

Solanas later shot Andy Warhol on 6/3/1968 when she was under the delusion that Warhol was keeping a very strange, Avant-garde and pornographic movie script that she wrote that he actually lost after she had given it to him... she also shot an art critic that was in Warhol's studio at the time and attempted to shoot Warhol's manager... Solanas said that Warhol "had too much control over my life."

She had actually appeared in some of Warhol's equally strange movies made in "The Factory" in the year or so before she shot Warhol.

Warhol was clinically dead after Solanas shot him, but he was brought back to life when a surgeon opened Warhol's chest and massaged his heart back to life in the hospital ER after the shooting.

Solanas received a three-year sentence in a psychiatric hospital... Warhol refused to testify against her at her trial.

Solanas later died in 1988 in my home town, San Francisco.

Warhol never fully recovered from that gunshot wound and died in 1987 from complications after a gallbladder operation from a post-operative cardiac arrhythmia in the hospital almost 20 years after his shooting.

Solanas outlived Warhol by just over a year.

This story can be seen in a very good movie called "I Shot Andy Warhol" with Lili Taylor as the infamous Valerie Solanas and Jared Harris as the equally famous and infamous Andy Warhol.

See these links for this story's background...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCUM_Manifesto
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_Solanas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Warhol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Shot_Andy_Warhol

Well, so much for our little crying game and light humorous chatter... it just made me think of the acronym "SCUM" when I was reading your description of what the "SCUMM" forum is named for.

Enjoy

It's hard to say any of this without sounding a little rude or offensive but I will try.

It's too late now but this is not a chat room. A forum is a whole different thing to a chat room.
I'd be happy to speak with you over PMs or something if I had the same interests (MIDI) but I don't really. You should of asked before uploading The Kinks file if I was interested as I'm not.

So don't take any of it the wrong way digiday. I hate to quell enthusiasm of any kind but I'm sure you can understand why I've wrote (typed) what I have.
All the best.

That's alright Red_Breast... your initial enthusiasm in your responses had me thinking that you were (1) interested, and (2) a woman.

No harm done since I don't plan to ask any more questions here or spend any more time on this forum... my problem has otherwise been solved.

The song file was something that was uploaded to a file serving website that has nothing to do with ScummVM.

Sorry for being over zealous and spoiling the sacred forum-tone here.

"Sorry for being over zealous and spoiling the sacred forum-tone here."

You've actually misunderstood me but no problem. It's easy to do over the internet.
I thought that maybe you yourself didn't know the difference between a forum and a chat room but it sounds like you do. If you ever get into adventure games please post as like I said I like to see some humour in posts.
Cheers.
