Joystick support in Linux?

I'm running 0.9.0 in Ubuntu Linux (6.10) and using the --joystick=0 command line switch doesn't seem to do anything (my joystick works with other programs). There's a bug for this, but I was wondering if joysticks are even supported or in the codebase for Linux, or if it's a Windows-only sort of feature.

I beleive in System -> Prefrences (Or Administration) there is something about joysticks. I can't put my finger on it though.
