Google Chrome says "residualvm-win32.exe appears malici

Post by soulhand »

... when I download it. Any idea why this might happen?

How do I re-assure myself that it is not malicious? are there keys/checksums I can verify?

(It's the first time Chrome has said this for any file I've downloaded)

It's open source, you could always check.

It's not malicious though. Dunno why Chrome would say that.

I am able to confirm that this happens and I am looking into the problem. I would be cautious if I were you. Just because the source code is all fine does not mean that something did not slip into the file on the server somehow.

You could always scan the file with antimalware software, but the notice you've got is probably a false positive (since I've never gotten a warning on the installer at any time up to and including today).

Just for kicks I uploaded today's Windows installer to virscan.org and none of the engines it queries found anything amiss. That, of course, only tells you that those engines didn't find anything, not necessarily that there was nothing to find, but it does reinforce the idea that the notice you got isn't anything to worry about.

Having the source isn't necessarily enough:

Well, probably not. But then Chrome probably had its reasons for saying it was. Unfortunately, it's not specific about what it found.

It's still complaining (about the stable and latest unstable builds, too)
