Quest for Glory debug mode?

Post by dfabulich »

I enjoy the Quest for Glory games, but I hate grinding my stats. I'm wondering if there's a way to use the ScummVM debug console to adjust my stats.

I already know how to cheat in QFG1 EGA (Hero's Quest) and in QFG2, which come with their own built-in cheat/debug systems.

There's also this nifty tool to generate exported characters, suitable for import into QFG2 and QFG3, but when importing into QFG3, the stats are capped at 200. https://qfg.azurewebsites.net/
https://github.com/aplocher/BitCollecto ... cterEditor

And there's a Windows app to edit import files for importing into QFG3 and QFG4, with source available.

But what I'm looking for is a way to directly bump my stats in QFG1 VGA, QFG3, and QFG4, so I don't have to grind my stats at all during the game.

I read the instructions here https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/SCI/Debug_Modes which recommends copying debug scripts from Dagger of Amon Ra or Police Quest (SCI remake), but the SCI Decoder doesn't run on my Windows 10 64 bit machine, and anyway it would appear that those debug scripts wouldn't provide a way to adjust stats (since those games don't have stats to begin with).

What are my options here?

Let the record show that while I never directly figured this out, I did notice that in QFG3 and QFG4, you don't have to grind any stats if you import a "perfect" character from from the previous game (all of the non-zero stats at maximum).

In QFG3, a perfect import generated using the BlazingStix tool has 250 in all stats. No puzzles or combats require stats higher than 250, especially if you go to the in-game Settings panel and crank the "Skill" meter down to 0. (I recommend that anyway, because otherwise the random monster encounters are too frequent/annoying.)

I also recommend this QFG3 Fan Patch, to fix bugs in QFG3. https://github.com/AshLancer/QFG3-Fan-Patch

In QFG4, I was able to enable "strategy mode" in combat and never run any risk of dying, as long as I solved the puzzles correctly; no puzzles or combats required stats higher than 300.

(Fighters and Paladins learn Climbing in QFG4, so I added Climbing 300 to my QFG3 export, as well.)

There's no need for that. I've made sure every single article in The Cutting Room Floor's QFG category provides downloadable debug files (from the games' own files) plus instructions plus detailed lists of values that can be changed.

P.S.
Please consider changing this topic's title to debug mode instead of cheats.
