Grim Fandango French

Post by Telev »

Hello,

I have 2 sets of original CDs of Grim Fandango in French.
When i copy all LAB files in my hard drive from the CDs for use with ScummVM, i have a message "data003.lab is may be corrupted" and the md5 of the file is showed.
I don't know if the file is corrupted or not, but when i have tried to dump my CD's with Alcohol 120%, i get a message
Read data examination error at: 95109
. And when i mount my image, the file data003.lab is not readable. Maybe a copy protection on the CD ?
I have the same behavior with my 2 sets CD's.

How to be sure that the file is good ?

Regards

Do you see any visible issues on the problematic CD's surface? Maybe you can try cleaning the readable surface with a soft cloth (look up tips on how to properly clean CDs on Google, there are lots of sites with simple instructions).

The other thing I can think of is try with another CD Drive (or more likely to find a DVD drive) and see if you get better luck.

Edit: I did find some (little) info about a copy protection that localized versions of Grim Fandango had. So in that case, if this applies to the French version as well, I am unsure if it will be easy to make perfect backup copies / dumps of the CD contents. However, maybe the updated (fan made) Grim Fandango setup tool would work for your case? https://quickandeasysoftware.net/grim-f ... so-updated

I have 2 original copies of the games.
Each copy have this issue, so i assume i have 2 good copies and the french localisation is copy protected.
So, if i copy & past the files, i can use it with SCUMMVM or this is not possible beacause the copy protection ?

EDIT: Just tried the setup replacement, and i get the same MD5 hash if i copy/past the file from the CD

Not related to the initial problem.
If i point SCUMMVM into the folder installed with the replacement setup, a file is missing.
The popup forward to an outdated URL.

The outdated url is for specifying the required data files (by the ScummVM GRIME engine) in order to run the game properly. The current url for this is:
https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Grim ... data_files

I am guessing local.lab is on one of the game's CDs.

Also, are you testing with the latest ScummVM release 2.6.0?

Again I can only guess here, but I'd say it would work. You can try it and confirm this for certain, though.

I use ScummVM 2.6
I think the game will be run fine in the 2 first chapter. Because the only suspect file is the "DATA003.LAB" used in the third chapter.
So, for confirm that, i will do a run of the game.

Just in case: if you or someone else is looking for a French version of Grim Fandango which doesn't have this problem, I own this compilation (Le Meilleur de l'Aventure LucasArts, circa 2003) and I can confirm that the CDs don't have any kind of DRM.

Thanks for the tips @Tsomi
If it's possible, can you provide the md5 hash for the *.LAB files ?

Thank you, that confirms my fears... my "DATA003.LAB" file has a different hash and all the others correspond to your list.

I got the same game compilation from @Tsomi for cheap, and now it works fine.
So I think the original version has some kind of copy protection, because all files have the same md5 hash, except the GRIM.exe (the game launcher)
Game executable and data files are the same
