Recommended games

Post by daaceking »

Hello,

I haven't really played many games that are compatible with scummvm, mainly because I grew up around the nintendo 64. I have played monkey islands 1-5 and have same and max, but what other games are there? I like comedy games such as monkey island. I would mainly play it on symbian.

Thanks

Pretty much everything LucasArts has ever made adventure-wise. Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, even the Indy games have a lot of that LucasArts comic vibe to them. Then there's the Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry series from Sierra. Also, Freddy Pharkas. I gather that Rex Nebular was a comedic game (by Microprose, I think), but ScummVM doesn't support it yet. That's off the top of my head.

Some of the Sierra games are really unfair, though. Larry 1 is fine, Larry 5 and up too. But I wouldn't recommend Larry 2 and 3 at all, unless you wouldn't mind playing it step by step according to a walkthrough.

Yes. That's a very adventure thing to recommend. Why don't you let him make up his own opinions?

I don't know what any of them games actually offer, could you give some details about them? I have had a look at some of them but I don't find them appealing such as larry and full throttle. That's the biker game isn't it? I have had a look at the day of the tentacle I don't think I would like that too. I could be wrong. Let's take Sam and max, I've started the game and am already stuck. Just had a look at a YouTube video and apparently max is supposed to turn the cat inside out?!? To be honest I like the graphics of curse of monkey island and somethIng around that time I think would be best. :)

Thanks

You won't find much in that graphics style, it was really unique...lots doesn't like it (me included :-) )
MI 4 has the same (updated) style and the MI series from Telltale Games followed them (there's also a remake of the first part and probably even the second...not sure about that)

Most of the old/classic adventure games around won't offer a cartoon-ish/over-the-top realistic look, rather they try to look "purely realistic" ... like in the way the Indiana Jones games were made.

Sorry, your best thing to do is...try some and let them surprise you, there are lots of old gems on sale for decent prices

There is no such thing as recommendable adventure games as every being has it's own taste...

Have phun ;-)

I only have monkey island 1 2 and 3 and Sam and max. I really enjoy 3 but 1 and 2 isn't as funny as the special editions because they don't talk and Sam and max appears to be more funny watching the walkthrough on YouTube instead of playing it because it is so challenging and I'm not used to that sort of adventuring. I think the best game is curse and that's fully playable so I'm happy :)

edit: the hardest part of curse, the first time I played it was the bit where you had to get the guys gold tooth out of the shop. Took me weeks. I think I cheated in the end and looked at a walkthrough :)

If you liked Monkey Island you'll like Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle. They're all adventure games just like Monkey Island with the same type of humour and puzzles. Full Throttle does have some very small arcade sequences but it's a great game with a great story (and funny!). Day of the Tentacle even moreso. Give them a chance. At least try the demos which are freely available.

Leisure Suit Larry is kind of a tounge-in-cheek adult humour type of game, but it isn't porn. I've never played them myself but many swear by its humour and entertainment value. It's not really as risque as it may look on first glance. Certainly nothing like the ridiculously off-the-mark sequels made recently (Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust).

Space Quest is a game set in the future where you play as a janitor who, during his adventures, ends up saving the universe several times over. Very sarcastic type of humour. The main character is Roger Wilco, who is a blonde idiot who survives dangerous encounters out of sheer dumb luck (and your help). In SQ4 and SQ6 he frequently has arguments with the overly-sarcastic narrator (voiced by Gary Owens). The game also treats dying as another form of comic relief by making some of the funniest deaths ever found in an adventure game with some great remarks about your poor performance by the narrator making dying in Space Quest actually fun.

I'd be happy to try out space quest, day of the tentacle and Full throttle but I'm going to pass on larry :)

Edit: the thing about monkey island is the piratEy theme and also the swordplay and ship battle things. I even liked monkey kombat in the fourth. I'm not too keen on the other themes but I'd give it a go. :)

Edit 2: sierra sci and agi, any idea what they are? Some of the space quest are in both.

Thanks

Simon the Sorcerer II has piratey moments. It takes place in a fairytale world.

AGI and SCI are adventure interpreters/engines. AGI is the big blocky pixel 16 colour graphics where you type in all commands which appear at the bottom of the screen and there is no mouse support (though, in ScummVM limited mouse support was added via the Sarien AGI interpreter). Music and sound effects are also rather limited to either a single (PC Speaker) or 3 channel (IBM PCjr) sound.

There are multiple versions of SCI both with typing commands and without. All have mouse support, however. The 16 colour SCI games have not so blocky pixels as AGI and have mouse support but all the commands are done mainly by typing. Though in some you can right click to look at objects.

The VGA SCI games are completely mouse-driven like LucasArts games and have the same interface as Sam & Max. Some have voice support the later they go. Music and sound effects in SCI games range from MIDI to digital. ScummVM has support for both.
