Uups,

I accidentially created the md5sum using md5sum.exe and not the command you mentioned. (scummvm -d0)

this is what I get now:

I added details for the German version of Simon the Sorcerer 1 (DOS Floppy) to ScummVM CVS, the change will be in the next ScummVM snapshot.

We have those details in ScummVM already, they added added on 17th November 2005. Maybe you are using an old ScummVM snapshot?

Fixed the issue, there were spaces after the md5 details, which caused detection to fail. Changes will be in the next ScummVM snapshot.

I added details for German version of Simon the Sorcerer 1 (DOS Floppy) recently, so they might not be in all the current ScummVM snapshots. Please try the ScummVM snapshot for 22nd November 2005, when it is available.

Newbie alert! =P Although I was actually part of the old forums anyway

So this is why I get a "cracked versions aren't supported!" message when trying to use the data files from my copy of Simon 1 Floppy that I had backed up on media a while back? =( I remember when trying to use it originally (after installing the game off the original floppies) with a previous version of ScummVM that it wasn't able to get past the manual protection section, so I had pretty much no choice but to crack it with a random manual-protection-cracking tool from days of old. I did want to be able to play it after all.

Kinda ironic then that now ScummVM rejects versions with so much as one modified data file, reversing my fortunes once more. Guess I'll just have to dig out those floppies once again.....

Does anyone know why the MD5 detection thingy was rejigged for this version, may I ask out of pure interest???

To properly distinguish between numerous subtle different versions and because Feeble Files development has started. Also now there are just 3 targets instead of a dozen, just like in SCUMM engine.

Simon the Sorcerer 2 English (DOS Floppy):

GAME32 - 27c8e7feada80c75b70b9c2f6088d519
ICON.DAT - ee92d1f84893195a60449f2430d07285
SIMON2.GME - eefcc32b1f2c0482c1a59a963a146345
STRIPPED.TXT - e229f84d46fa83f99b4a7115679f3fb6
TBLLIST - 2082f8d02075e590300478853a91ffd9

I take it that an additional bonus of knowing MD5 sums is so ScummVM can then skip the manual protection screen when needed?

It should be (legally) OK if someone mailed you the un-cracked version of the modified data file (or a diff against it) so that you can replace your cracked version with a genuine one.

IANAL however . . .

I added details for English versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 (DOS Floppy), the changes will be in the next ScummVM snapshots.

The copy protection for a game is only disabled in ScummVM, if a game was re-released without the copy protection. The floppy versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 were never re-released with the copy protection disabled.

Is this the AGA or ECS version? we aren't taking details for ECS versions at this point.

The Amiga demo will already work under ScummVM, but you need to unpack the gameamiga file manually. Use extract_simon1_amiga from the tools package to unpack the gameamiga file.

Oh. Does that mean you literally have to get the manual out everytime you want to play it with ScummVM? What if, say, somebody bought a second-hand copy of the floppy version from eBay or a car boot sale and found none of the documentation was included in the box?

Just thought I'd ask.

Yes, since it could cause legal issues, if copy protection was disabled in ScummVM, without permission from the developer/publisher. You should always be sure the copy protection details are included, before buying any old DOS games.
