How about filters in the ScummVM menu?

I've just read the forum with all the *weird* ideas popping up lately, very funny.

But seriously, i have an idea for ScummVM:
How about implementing a FILTER-button inside the ScummVM menu.

Once clicked, one can choose between:

a) different letters (games begin with)
b) game-types (AGI, SCUMM, Humongous, others, etc.)
c) no filter

... plus more filters the developers could think of.

Since the early support of AGI-games, the menu gets a bit overcrowded
if one has installed a lot of games.

The setting for the filter-button could easyly be saved in the .ini-file.

Maybe this is a better idea? 8)

if you really own that many games, you could as well create one ini with the lucasarts games, one with the humongoues games, etc, then use different shortcuts to start scummvm from the start menu

saves programming time to be spent on engine programming :)

Okay, coding time spent on the engine(s) is one thing, but hey,
ScummVM doesn't have that many features and a simple button
would be implemented within a day or two, but well...

BTW i do not own that many games to overcrowd the menu, but as a programmer i can think of many "what-would-be-if" situations
from the users point of view.

But i respect the coder(s) point of view here because i code GUIs, too. :)

If you code GUIs too, you could implement it yourself and send the patch to the patch tracker?

I'd love to, but i'm not into C++/ASM. Just VB, sorry! :cry:

Not many people are going to have that many games to warrent filtering, but perhaps categorizing by company instead?

For example:
* If you only have a couple of games (3 or less) then the list is as normal.
* If you have more than 3 games, then a bolded company name groups each of the games, like so:

Lucas Arts
> Maniac Mansion
> Day of the Tentacle
> Sam and Max Hit The Road
Revolution
> Broken Sword I: Shadow of the Templars
> Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror

ordered by release date asc or desc by choice.

I don't think this is necessary. I have 36 targets on my mac (some demos, several games with multiple versions).

The list is in alphabetical order already, so I just scroll down to it.

yeah although the bold-ed list is a sort of neat idea i really dont mind the way it is now. I often just edit the games title to denote what version of the game im playing, one could possibly group them by preceding the game with a number, ie: 1 before every lucasarts game, 2 before revolution, etc altough some groups will be very small unless you mix a few (FOTAQ and gobliiins come to mind)

also, hey clone2727 i saw your post at lucasarts general discussion (i think) but the topic was locked before i could reply (not quite sure why)

I guess eventually it would be nice to have details like company and year made but that can be done once the core is fully developed (or further on at least).

Never! ScummVM is a tool that allows you to play old adventures, to have fun with them again. That's it. In particular, it is *not* a collector's database. We provide the launcher merely as a convenience for people who happen to own many old adventures. But in now way is knowledge about "details like company and year made" required for this. If you want to store data like that, create a database were you can collect all and any information about this.

But I'd consider it serious bloat if we added such features to ScummVM.
