Which games would you like to be supported on the future?

All the inane chatter goes in here. If you're curious about whether we will support a game, post HERE not in General Discussion :)

You know the funny thing? No one's mentioned BlackStar Agent of Justice, which was a staple of shareware games as much as TeenAgent, or Amber: Journeys Beyond, which is allegedly very good and very hard to run on modern systems (I say allegedly because I tried it and wasn't very impressed, but I keep hearing great stuff about it). Going through the list and seeing what people want to play in ScummVM was way cool, it was a trip through titles both new and familiar; I love this genre so much it was no chore at all. But a couple of names were glaring for their absence; these two in particular.

(I'm not expressing an interest in having them in ScummVM, to be clear. Just mentioning them)

(no one mentioned the Pilgrim series either, but I hated that game, so I don't mind that :P )

(I mean, there are plenty of games no-one's mentioned, but these were relatively high-profile, as I understand it)

(wheee, parenthesis party!) ()()()()()()

No one mentioned The Detective Game, the Commodore 64 game from 1986 that was years ahead of its time with action icons and NPCs that moved in the house and even locked an unlocked doors. Apparently I didn't mention the game either, although I know for sure that I have spoken about the game on some Internet forums. If there's one Commodore 64 game that deserves to be included in ScummVM (with free saving preferable added), it's this one.

There's even a fan remake for Nintendo DS, made in 2009 and can be downloaded for free.

Probably joking. For posterity:
1 - Civilization I-IV
It doesn't fall within the scope of ScummVM, but someone should totally create some modern interpreter/conversion for CivNet, the expanded and upgraded version of the original Civilization game. I have managed to get it running with some third party tools, but the colours are messed up and there are issues. The original game runs fine in DOSbox, but CivNet would need some kind of reimplementation.
Not that anyone cares about my opinion, but I wouldn't mind CivNet being the one exception to ScummVM's adventure/RPG rule... :)

I wouldn't label that as a joke. The game is an adult-themed point-and-click adventure!
I suppose you might be thinking about Sex Games, which is a parody about Epyx olympics/sports games (Summer Games, Winter Games) for Commodore 64.

Never heard of it, but now I wanna play it! And you reminded me of "The Scoop", also an important percursor to current P&C adventuring!
I wouldn't mind CivNet being the one exception to ScummVM's adventure/RPG rule.
Ah, but there, I think, lies the thing! ScummVM had an "adventure" rule. Heck, it had a "SCUMM" rule. :) Then when RPGs came in... wham! Precedent! Now we're wishing for RPGs too, and ScummVM now has an adventure/RPG scope! Mostly narrative adventure-y RPGs, to be sure. But this would have been totally unheard of before. Crusader: No Remorse was an incidental addition because of Ultima, and bam, now there are requests for No Regret (I almost wonder there being no requests for Alone in the Dark and Bioforge. Ok, those are full 3d). Another World is in ScummVM; bam, precedent (wonder no one's asking for Flashback or, hey, Prince of Persia).

ScummVM's rule, or rather its scope, is... whatever it is, but I find it interesting that you're talking about its adventure/RPG rule, when the RPG is something that is pretty much an add-on that gained some traction. And if CivNet were to be added... it wouldn't be long before ScummVM had an adventure/RPG/(whatever-those-games-are,I-wasn't-into-them).

...at some point I think we do have to take a step back and fight feature-creep.

But this thread is the right place to dream. :-D

Not my judgement, it was the original poster. :)
Pseudo_Intellectual wrote: Fri Oct 15, 2010 10:07 amMidway between the AGI kind of game and the more traditional icon-based ones SCUMMVM loves the best is a game many love to hate, the adaptation of the movie Psycho. More scary is a property whose owner has recently expressed interest in keeping alive, the Last Half of Darkness trilogy, and in its wake other games with similar interfaces -- GrailQuest, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and for a change of pace, the final Brad Stallion game -- Sex Olympics! Okay, well maybe not that last one.
The last sentence made me think he wasn't really serious. Plus, he ends the post with, "So these won't enter the SCUMMVM stable until pigs fly -- but hey, you just got introduced to a dozen games you never knew about before!" Which to me means all his suggestions go into the middle category: "the person who suggested this thought it was unlikely but still wanted to mention them". As it happens, though, a number of them were moved to the main list anyway!

I would like to see more engines from Russian developers in ScummVM, because the emulator supports only these games - Full Pipe, Red Comrades (S.K.I.F. games), some Wintermute garbage (partially) and QDEngine games. There are also the unlikely Liath: Worldspiral and GAG: The Impotent Mystery, which are currently unsupported and the engine development is frozen.

I would like ScummVM to support these Russian engines:

Saturn-Plus (Nine Princes of Amber (DOS), Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty's Return, The Adventures of Rzhevskiy, Agent: Special Mission, The Twelve Chairs, some Red Comrades games) - Jazz and Faust and Midnight Nowhere, that developed by Saturn Plus, too, uses unique 3D engines.
Trickster Games (Tanita, Petrovich, KikoRiki: Parallel Worlds, etc.)
Alexander Efremov (Shtyrlitz games, Leo-The-Cat's Summer Cottage (Gobliiins-like game), Clay Agent, Clay Dream, White Sun of the Desert)
Gamos (Pilot Brothers 1-2 (Gobliiins-like game))
Phantomery (Sublustrum)
Step Creative Group (Adventures of Alice, Star Heritage, Inhabited Island: The Earthling)
Frogwares (Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Silver Earring, Journey to the Center of the Earth (2004)) - while Frogwares working for European pubishers, they're are Ukrainian developers. But their first game (Sherlock Holmes: Mystery of the Mummy) uses PhoenixVR engine.
Aquarium (Aquarium: Ring of Time)
NMG (Escape from the Haunted House, Star Judge)
Nival (Sea Legends)

And also, early games in Nikita engine like Magic Dream, New Robinson and Blue Beard, and these Sierra-impressioned games with unique engines (Ivan Lozhkin: Price of Freedom/Иван Ложкин: Цена свободы (DOS), Fairy Tales on Birch Bark/Сказки на бересте: Хождения за тридевять земель (DOS) and Viy: Retold Story/Вiй: История, рассказанная заново (Windows)).

Some games actually don't work on modern computers, and it is also impossible to play due the StarForce. But DOS games can be played in DOSbox emulator.

I have just selected the best, most interesting and playable games from ours. Although most of our quests are garbage, so you should skip them.

Before I suggested in another topic such games as:

The Pagemaster (Windows 3.x)
Voodoo Kid
Stonekeep
Fairy Tale About Father Frost, Ivan and Nastya
Rent-A-Hero (neo Software)
The Forgotten: It Begins (mTropolis)
Paris 1313: The Mystery of Notre-Dame Cathedral
RedJack: The Revenge of the Brethren
101 Dalmatians: Escape from DeVil Manor
Little Critter and the Big Race
Little Monster games (The Smelly Mystery, The Mummy Mystery)
The Ward (2000, Croatian sci-fi game)
Hollywood Monsters (one of best known games by creators of Runaway: A Road Adventure, released only in Spain and Italy)
Granny 3D games (mostly, SpongeBob games and Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None)
Some of Learning Company games, especially ClueFinders and Reader Rabbit
Mortadelo y Filemon: El Sulfato Atómico
The Abbey (2008)

Unlikely games:

Every game by Capstone (this is really a unplayable mess)
Space Hulk
Towers: Lord Baniff's Deceit
The Punisher (Amiga/Atari ST)
Hook (Ocean)
Down in the Dumps (it looks so ugly)
Dragon Lore dilogy (it really so painful)
The Incredible Machine series (i would like to see this game in future versions of ScummVM, but why?)
Silverload
Koala Lumpur: Journey to the Edge (frozen)
The Big Red Adventure (actual version crashes after intro in ScummVM)
Igor: Objective Uikokahonia (actual version crashes in ScummVM)
The Dame Was Loaded
Bad Day on the Midway
Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time
Little Big Adventure 2: Twinsen's Odyssey
Time Commando (same engine as Little Big Adventure 2)
Betrayal in Antara (it doesn't uses Sierra's SCI engine)
Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
King's Quest VIII: Mask of Eternity (more like a Diablo killer Action-RPG, than quest)
In Cold Blood (frozen)
Myst IV: Revelation
El Tesoro de Isla Alcachofa
Mortadelo & Filemon trilogy by Alcachofa Soft (it looks like there will be difficulties porting CD audio from two discs)
Monet: The Mystery of the Orangerie Museum
Rome: Caesar's Will
Ronia, the Robber's Daughter (rare Swedish game based on Astrid Lindgren's book)
Oliver's Adventures (another rare Swedish game)
Diamond Mystery in Rosemond Valley (same engine as Oliver's Adventures)
Most of Virtools games
Ogre3D games (Ankh, Jack Keane, Ceville, etc.)
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure
Thorgal: Odin's Curse (along with other games by Cryo)
Gobliiins IV (the game is really disappointing)
Once Upon a Forest
Scooby-Doo Mystery (Sega Genesis, it needs reverse engineering to check it)
Synnergist (debut game by Vicarious Visions)

I would also like to see Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?/Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time, because i played it on Windows 10 and it often crashed and freezed.

From the games on the Macromedia Director engine, I would like to see:

The Journeyman Project (and Turbo)
Connections (1995)
Isis
9: The Last Resort
Golden Gate
AMBER: Journeys Beyond
Jewels of the Oracle
Secrets of the Luxor
Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh
Byzantine: The Betrayal
Beyond Time
Traitors Gate
Crystal Key
Crusader: Adventure Out of Time
Vikings: Adventure Out of Time
Genesys
DDT: Virtualia
I Spy series (the first game i have as a kid)
Master of the Elements
Opera Fatal
Heureka-Klett's educational Myst clones (Physicus, Geographicus, Mathica, etc.)
Mouse Mia series
Pong Pong Learning Adventures series
Internet Easy Go
Games by Tivola
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Riddle of the Sphinx dilogy
Dark Fall: The Journal
Dark Fall: Lights Out
Barrow Hill
The Vulturе: An investigation in Paris under Napoleonic rule
Legacy Interactive games (Emergency Room, Zoo Vet, etc.)

Before I mentioned my requests in my video compilation on YouTube, which I later deleted because few people aren't interested in it. And also, no one understood me the first time, thinking that I was lying about supported games.

@Peter Piers: Hey, thanks a lot for all your work with that updated list, very nice to have!

Let me just nitpick one tiny detail I still remember from the thread/conversation last week: Faery Tale Adventure 1 should get a little upgrade to +2. Feisty requested it and I speculated about some theoretical issues with that game the devs might or might not have after that. But I still definitely meant to "+1" it.

I'll edit it accordingly, and I'm impressed you picked up on that! You're right, I didn't quite get the feeling from your reply that you were expressing interest in the sense of "I'd like it too" (or if there was interest I may have missed it; it happens, there's a lot of lovely discussion in this thread), so I didn't count it. I deffinitely will.

Zhuravl2000 has added quite a wishlist (and mentioning some games I was surprised not to hear about before. I guess we users have become bold enough to wish for stuff we absolutely wouldn't have before. I can't believe someone actually suggests Time Commando, which I remember very well, but like I said: there have been action-adventure precedents set!). I'll add it, to be sure, next time I update the post, which will be in a few days or do. But I'm not sure I'll list "engines" on the wishlist. Just specific games/series. On the face of it "engines" may be more useful, but when we consider how even within the engine there may be hardcoded stuff that makes each game a new challenge... plus, I am not quite up for reasearching which games use the engine.

General reminder: adding lots more stuff to the list, especially more stuff to the "1" section, is more likely to dilute the whole thing and make it less palatable to even look at. It's a pretty huge list as it is, with so many games having had just one person expressing interest. Of course, one person plus one person equals two, and so everyone's input matters; every vote starts at 1 before increasing.

I would recommend to think whether you're wishing because you really want to see this in ScummVM, knowing the ton of volunteer, unpaid work it entails, or just to pad out the engine with as many possibilities as possible.

Having said that, if you wanna go ahead and wish on something, wish away! I'll keep the list updated as long as I'm around, and re-post the link when there are updates. I think that'll work.

Ok, this was a lot of games, so I added them to the list already instead of waiting around.

No one noticed that I later added a rare Swedish game to my list of requests. I'm about Ronja Rövardotter: https://youtube.com/watch?v=XKL97qfj_JU

And also, these Swedish 3D adventures games - Oliver's Adventures and Diamond Mystery of Rosemund Hill: https://youtube.com/watch?v=R3DxtbaBGTM , https://youtube.com/watch?v=QE10s6DfwYg ... A3wcTssV05

Although they somewhat resemble Simon the Sorcerer 3D in their angularity, but graphics in Simon the Sorcerer 3D much worse, so this game shouldn't be added at ScummVM.

I also mentioned the rare adventure game The Dame Was Loaded.

That one's available on GOG and Steam, so at the very least it's not hard to get. I only played it for a little bit, though. Looked interesting, but I remember getting really annoyed by the way it handled saving. I think you were under a time limit, but to save you had to travel back to your office, or something like that?

That's an external link. Gimme a break, I'm not going to crawl external links. Post here about the games you want to see added on ScummVM.[/quote]

I apologise, this is incorrect. You did list it. I didn't find it before because I was looking for "Ronja", and in your list you spelled it "Ronia", so a search wasn't giving me anything. I found it now while revamping the entire list to match each user to a "vote". I'd also missed a few others.

EDIT - I meant to post my apology, but instead edited this post. And what this post used to have is now gone. Probably for the best.

As it is, I will keep an eye on the program updates. If not all at once, then many games gradually appear. In another case, some little-known games may be overlooked.
