Which games would you like to be supported on the future?

All the inane chatter goes in here. If you're curious about whether we will support a game, post HERE not in General Discussion :)

I found a bunch, that all seem rather interesting, they also have in common that they are all titles that I missed/never played in their time:

Bloodwych (1989) Released two years after Dungeon Master and decidedly inspired by that game in question.
Same, I remember the cover and that it was a major title back in its day, but never actually played it.
Certainly, would be nice to have this in ScummVM.
The other two titles sound interesting, too, but I don't remember knowing them from back then.

I read in another post of yours you wanted the Faery Tale Adventure games supported. I think the second one, Halls of the Dead, already is and working fine, if I remember correctly. The first one is very lovely, a great youth memory.

I remember it on the Amiga playing very much like a half action / rpg hybrid, though, with Joystick character movements and such. Maybe the developers here may feel it is not "point & click" - style enough to be a typical Scumm-supported title, but I would love that one supported very much, too. IF ScummVM would ever support it, I think the Amiga version of that one is the technically and graphically superior version to the other ports and should be the one version to focus on.

In all honesty, however - a small parenthesis here - I think before getting any new games, I would prefer for the existing games to be fully compatible and playable without issues, or as little as possible... as per viewtopic.php?t=17469 Lure of the Temptress, one of the games available for longer, still has issues; as per viewtopic.php?t=17468 Cruise for a Corpse still has an intro music issue that seems to have been under the radar since ever.

So, I would LOVE to see more games supported!

...but before that, I would prefer that the supported games had less issues wherever possible. :) This comes in the wake of brand new games - Laserdisc shooters! I remember playing Mad Dog McCree in an arcade myself (and losing very often). It's very welcome! I'm just going... let's not forget the ones which are already in but still need some work. :D

It still was an enjoyable sci-fi adventure I wanted to finish on PC for more than 30 years, but never came around to it... Maybe it could still fit in?
That's actually a very good question, considering that just yesterday there was an announcement about American Laser Games being supported. Not that I am complaining, but my first intuition was: "aren't these games too action-oriented for ScummVM?"

I guess just like with 2.5D adventures, 3D adventures, and RPGs at one point, ScummVM has broadened its scope, and at least interactive movies/FMV games are now included, even if they have shooting and stuff. (Then again, someone could make the claim that FMV games aren't really real games, but more like visual novels with poor video quality... :P )

Feisty wrote: Fri Mar 06, 2026 11:59 amJust like you, I'm starting to feel that the "Classical Adventure" part of ScummVM, is now so comprehensive that there are only a few titles more to be desired. As a result, I started to go over old RPG-titles instead last evening.
Yeah, ScummVM compatibility is really impressive these days. It wasn't too long ago that I was genuinely surprised that some game (that I don't recall right now) was actually playable with ScummVM. You really can't keep track of them all!

But then again, I was recently hitting the random game button on AGS site looking for something to play. And the first two games that I tried, neither of them runs in ScummVM perfectly at the moment. So there's still a lot of work left to do.

Even if we forget AGS entirely, there are literally hundreds of very traditional adventure games that don't run in ScummVM. So there's no need to choose RPGs because there aren't any adventures left. There are all those 8-bit games, 16-bit games, and even many DOS/Windows games. And you can always find somewhat obscure stuff... like the Japanese remake of Mystery House from 1983. Some people even fan translated that into English about four years ago.

I suppose someone could make a wish for RPG Maker support. That would be hundreds of adventures and RPGs.

Yup, same here! It was the original "Faery Tale Adventure" that I was super impressed by, back on the Amiga. The world seemed so beautiful (for its time) and also large and filled with fascinating exploration. A great experience that I feel foreshadowed many of the later "open world rpgs" that were to come.

Yes, having games that are fully functional should obviously be a top priority. I have been somewhat fortunate, in that I have not played many games with significant issues. I think the latest was "Martian Memorandum", until the intro music was fixed in the official release.

True, there's still "plenty of fish in the Adventure Sea". The approach of the end, merely represents the end of those titles I have positive personal experience with, as well as feel significant nostalgia for. It is by no means an end to interesting adventures to add!

Well, sure, it was a fad that explored technology that sort of dead-ended. It's the Betamax of gaming. And sure, there was lots of crap. But, ah, every time I see someone dissing FMV (which you are not doing, to be clear, but which, as you say, "someone" may do ;) ) I feel the need to point out that, for all the crap, it still gave us GK2; Black Dahlia has a few issues, but it's still, I think, an important title (if far too puzzle-heavy); the Phantasmagoria games were important excursions in the field of computer-game horror. Criticism may be levelled at these - especially, I am aware, Phantasmagoria 1 - but they really were more than visual novels, video quality notwithstanding. :) And as for video quality, the X-Files game had, at the time, mind-blowing quality. It was like watching a TV episode. I remember that very well. In fact, it was so high-quality I had a really hard time getting it to play without stuttering...

Then there is the subset of FMV, which is games like Harvester (hey, that's a title for ScummVM! Harvester! :D :D :D ) or Riddle of Master Lu, which used digitized images. Not exactly like GK2 and its ilk, so one would not put them in the same basket necessarily, but certainly of the same family.

So yeah, someone could claim that, and then I'd be along to strike up a conversation expressing a differing point of view. 8)

EDIT - We should also never forget Ripper. FMV gave us the cringiest of all Cristopher Walken performances; I had an ex who knew nothing of adventure games but knew his performance in Ripper.

EDIT 2 - I just remember Tex Murphy. It's not in my radar, usually, because I came across it pretty late, and honestly, I never found it as awesome as all that; clearly a "you had to be there at the time" thing, and I wasn't. But it also very much deserves a mention.

Yeah, there are some FMV games that are better than others, obviously.
But even the good ones have some weird things in them. One of the favourite comments I have heard about Wing Commander 3 goes something like this: "you spend as much time watching the elevator going up and down the shaft as you spend fighting the Kilrathi." :D

But if we think about games that can somehow be counted as adventures, at least these are often considered good games (I'm not going to repeat the ones you said): Star Trek Klingon, Star Trek Borg, Sherlock Holmes The Consulting Detective series, J.B. Harold: Blue Chicago Blues, Kingdom: The Far Reaches, The Daedalus Encounter, etc.

The second generation FMV games are a different thing altogether. They avoid the biggest mistakes of the first generation, and obviously have HD video quality. I am talking about games like Late Shift.

Some of the new games can even parody the older games, like Press X to Not Die which starting from the title is poking fun at the whole FMV genre.

This does not qualify as "I wish this game were available", but since RPGs came into the conversation, I've been idly wondering about Arena - or, even more so, Daggerfall. But it's an idle thought. It's way outside the scope of ScummVM. Or is it? Considering the stuff that's already in? Precedents are being set. :)

Personally, and now this is strictly down to personal likes, I dislike crunch-heavy, spend-hours-on-making-character-traits RPGs; I favour either story-heavy or adventure-based RPGs (like, well, Quest for Glory for more adenturey-ones, and Lands of Lore for a story-based dungeon crawl), or roguelikes. I essentially like me some dungeon crawling. It is certainly cool to load up ScummVM and, instead of getting engrossed in a campaign, go for a quick session of a crawl. I used to like Dungeon Hack, which is, strictly speaking, pretty empty and dull - all it offers is the roguelike experience. Which is sometimes what I feel like! I have never played the Eye of the Beholder series, but since ScummVM supports them, I plan on getting them soon and giving them a whirl (I plan on trying to get the Amiga and SegaCD versions somehow if I can - I want that automap!).

All this is to say, if more RPGs were to be added, this is certainly where my interests would like. On one hand, story-heavy, not necessarily multiple-branching paths or anythings; RPGs like the ones that SSI made, crunching ones, are a bit meh for me; and honestly, I tried Ultima often and it never did much for me (but now that it's in ScummVM, I'll give it another go). That'd be what I'd like the most. I think Krondor kinda fits here. On the other end of the spectrum, roguelikes for a quick dungeon-crawl fix. When I say "quick", I mean I don't need a deep narrative other than the emergent one: I don't need to start a game that will span an epic. A hack, a crawl; I feel like one, I load one up, and play against the RNGs.

As a lifelong adventure game fan (I started early, and no other genre ever captured me as much), this is what would get my vote, and what I would love to see in ScummVM wish-wise.

As a completionist, before any of these things came to exist, however, I would prefer to see the current series "completed" (between quote marks because Ultima IX and, I think, Lands of Lore 3 may remain forever out of scope); the other Ultima games, and the other Might and Magic games, and whatnot.

All this talk of RPGs made me think of SSI, which made me think of Veil of Darkness. Now there's an intriguing game that I liked to play back when, even if I couldn't really get far into it for some reason.

RPGMaker games have been mentioned. To be sure, that would mean a whole new dimension to ScummVM. Also a whole new dimension of complexity, as it's another engine - like AGS - that has hundreds (thousands? dunno, probably) of games in varying versions that would need to be in good playable status, and, like AGS, may be a bit of an ongoing eternal battle.

Personally this would not get my vote, partly because I do not wish to go down that rabbit hole and partly because I think it would dillute the focus of the wonderful programmers in the project. But if it were to happen, and/or if there were programmers who really wanted it and would work on it, I would still be very happy about the additions.

The one thing I would love RPG maker support for is... "yay, I'd be able to play Corpse Party!"

EDIT - Funnily, the more I think about Dungeon Hack, the more I think I'd rather like to play it in ScummVM!

Would it be possible to add Krabat and the Secret of the Sorbian King?
It's a free 2D adventure game running on the Winturmute engine, but ScummVM doesn't detect it.

Just sneaking back in for a second because I just some minutes ago found out online there even was a graphic adventure sequel to the obscure Lovecraftian game "Hound of Shadows" I mentioned here some posts before (which I kind of misrepresented a bit calling it a hybrid graphic/text adventure, that makes only sense if you take a completely puritan approach to what is considered a text adventure - it's more fitting to call it a text adventure, period, with hybrid roleplaying elements and some in-game graphics).

That sequel completely escaped me until just right now and that one was called "Daughter of Serpents" - and that one is indeed described more as a graphical / point & click adventure from what I could read. The reception to it seems to have been mixed to outright negative. But for people like me interested in early Lovecraftian gaming titles I think it's not too uncommon to take a certain interest in even very flawed to actually shitty titles if they at least dare to go into some true Lovecraftian themes. And "Daughter of Serpents" seems to thrive quite heavy on them, from what I could see so far.

So I couldn't resist sharing my new discovery here, my apologies! It's not a request so far, by any means. I would first have to purchase it and check it out for myself.

Oh wow! Daughter of Serpents, which I had on CD-Rom as "The Scroll"! I completely forgot about that on! It's the sequel to Hound of Shadow? Fancy that!

But, you know, it's weird, but the game had a strange charm. Had two plotlines. Now that I read up on it, Daughter of Serpents seems to have had three. On "The Scroll", though, one of the plotlines was considerably shorter and less interesting.

I mean, I've played much, much, MUCH worse games. Bud Tucker comes to mind. I don't know about its floppy disk incarnation, but in the CD-ROM version, The Scroll, it was at least playable, finishable, and reasonably enjoyable. It was just far too short, and, well, honestly mediocre. But not flat-out bad. Not "I am just going to stop playing this" bad.

It might not be a request, but... well, I don't know if anyone would actively want to have The Scroll/Daughter of Serpents in ScummVM, but, while not tremendously interesting, it's not actively off-putting.

...way to damn with super-faint praise, I guess!

Yeah, same developers "Eldritch Games", did only these two games and disappeared, it seems.

Impressive you knew about it because i couldn't dream about being more unaware of a game than I was about this one.
I thought I had Lovecraftian early titles kinda all checked out over the decades but seems you never stop missing one or the other...

It might be because it sure doesn't feel lovecraftian. :P At least it didn't when I played. Back then I wasn't too sure what Lovecraftian was all about anyway, I think my first real Lovecraftian game was Anchorhead (and the rest is history). The Scroll was for me a story about egyptian mysticism and occultism and a cult and stuff. It was more reminiscent of Young Sherlock Homes than Lovecraft, to me.

I see, if you weren't aware of the whole Lovecraft mythology back when you played it, it's probably not too obvious.

But I read in some article it's got Cthulhu references all over it - and here on the backcover

https://www.mobygames.com/game/2534/dau ... ver-41017/

there is some stuff about "cult of the dark god Nyarlahotep" thrown right in your face immediately. So, yeah, I think I will have no choice but getting my hands on some used version.

Hope it will not be one of these super-expensive obscure vintage titles...

Oh haha, it did? Well, for teenager me, Nyarlahotep was just like Rame-tep in YSHolmes, an eghyptian sounding bad guy. :)

Best of luck in finding it. I don't recommend paying TOO much for it, if you do; it was a bargain even when I bought it. I hope you find both versions; apparently it may be kinda worth it to try both. (edit - I'd sell you my copy if I still had it, for cost of shipping, but I haven't had it for ages, and the CD was getting all scratched and unplayable anyway)

Speaking about bargains, I bought Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster way back when for, like... I don't know... 300$ (escudos) or something? This was a laughably low price. It's like 1.5€. Not really a good game, but not THAT bad. I'd never seen a physical game priced as low back then.* Another ScummVM potential title, I guess! I will never forget Tim Curry saying "It's alive. Alive! I... I have created life."

...not because it's a particularly good performance, though I really really like Tim Curry. Mostly because I ended up replaying the beginning a few times.

* Actually I have. Critical Path for 100 $ (escudos), which is like .5€. But this was well in Windows 98 era, and Critical Path would no longer even run on Win98. So they were clearly dumping it. I never got it to run...

Oh, the memories! Liath/Liathinter / Worldspiral I also barely got to run. I would actually enjoy being able to run it in ScummVM! The few moments of gameplay I was able to eke out, it's like I couldn't get anything done. I would like to reexperience it.

EDIT - Another game wish for ScummVM: Amrikrog. Because, we've got the Neverhood! :-D
