List of fan made ScummVM compatible game enhancements (mods/talkies/soundtracks/subtitles etc)

Post by kerb »

Since I've recently stumbled upon some I didn't know about I thought I'd just make a list of the ones I've found in various states of completion, let me know if I missed any! A couple of these rely on forks of ResidualVM or the discontinued ScummVMExt fork.
  • Might and Magic Book One (included in ScummVM): ScummVM provides the ability to play the game both the way the original looked, as well as a special enhanced mode that plays the game with enhanced graphics and the user interface from the later Xeen games.
  • Ultima VI (included in ScummVM): Enhanced mode allowing for full screen world view rather than the small window the original has, container gimps, and a bunch of other enhancements.
  • King's Quest IV VGA Talkie Unofficial Patch Preview (links and instructions in video description) (ScummVMExt): https://youtu.be/cm7kt1AeUPA

Enhanced soundtracks:
  • Remastered Soundtracks by The Fat Man and Team Fat (ScummVM-compatible music sets by the original composer of several supported Humongous Entertainment games, including instructions on how to hear the remastered music while playing.): https://thefatmanandteamfat.bandcamp.com/

I wanted to link to Myles Johnston's ScummVMExt/ScummVMX fork with support for HD graphics on SCI games, but that repo and various tools have been deleted (https://web.archive.org/web/20230418131 ... scummvmext) so most of what I could still find is just videos of various tests on his youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@uMiLO83 as well as this Colonel's Bequest HD mod https://playernone.blogspot.com/2021/02 ... n-mod.html by a fan.

This is the only download I could find of ScummVMExt, https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/dl2xd6ls ... 09-x64.zip (I don't know what the latest version was, archive.org's github snapshot only shows ScummVMExt v1.1.179b from 09/08/21)

There was a highly controversial thing for Space Quest IV. You might have to dig for it.

There's also:
- Might and Magic Book One: It provides an optional enhanced mode bringing in the user interface of World of Xeen (Xeen data files required) and the fan enhanced graphics pack.

- Ultima VI: Offers enhanced mode allowing for full screen world view rather than the small window the original has, container gimps, and a bunch of other enhancements.

- Blade Runner: enhanced mode restoring cut content

I haven't tried it myself, but The Fat Man and Team Fat have released some of the Humongous Entertainment soundtracks on Bandcamp, and they supposedly contain ScummVM compatible versions too: https://thefatmanandteamfat.bandcamp.com/

I probably just missed them. (I guess I scanned it for the individual game names, not the composer.)

Thanks! :) I've added the enhancements that are included in ScummVM to the list, and the Space Quest IV New Rising Sun patch + instructions.

I should clarify that the Restored Content for Blade Runner is still WIP. I have very little time these days to work on it, but I have planned almost entirely what remains to be done, and I am currently testing a few stuff locally for the next additions in a future version of ScummVM.

I do hope I get to finish it soon(tm), but real life work, which is very important to pay the bills and taxes, and also because it's another creative and productive outlet :D, is drastically limiting my free time.

A very interesting list that I saw just now for the first time. I am a bit confused about your inclusion criteria though. This is supposed to be a list of "enhancements", but there is a complete fan remake included in the list as well. Is that a mistake that shouldn't be on the list? Or should fan remakes actually be on the list, in which case the list is missing several titles.

Some of the most notable ones missing from the list are:

Are you talking about Space Quest V Voice Acting Mod?
https://github.com/cdb-boop/Space-Quest ... Acting-Mod

It's a great mod, BTW. It even "almost works" with ScummVM. As long as you don't die, reload, or restart the game (without restarting ScummVM), you should be able to play through the game with full voice acting.
But if you are referring to Space Quest IV, then I have no idea what you might be talking about?

Interesting list! I would add Quest for Glory 3: Enhanced Edition and Quest for Glory 4: Enhanced Edition.

Yep, done in AGS.

Hehehehe.

That was lil' ol' me. I really wanted to make a game, I had zero abilities to create a story and puzzle and graphics - that hasn't changed - and so I thought to "remake" (port?) one of the LSL games that I felt was the least talked about.

There are a few things I'd have done differently, if I still had the source code, but it still tickles me to see it mentioned now and again. For all its faults, I'm kinda proud of it.

Help, regarding Gabriel Knight 2 subtitle patch:

Does the link work for anyone?
I couldn't access using any browser due to SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP, and seems like there aren't any trustworthy backup online.
