Any way to open SCUMMVM menu in-game with on-screen controls hidden?

Post by heliummy »

On Android, Is there a way to access the SCUMMVM menu while the on-screen controls are disabled?

I'm using the Android app on a Samsung Tablet. I don't like the look of the game menu and control style selector being on the screen while playing, so I tried turning them off in the SCUMMVM options. But after doing that I couldn't find how to access the SCUMMVM menu for state saving and loading. If the SCUMMVM menu button would appear when swiping from the edge of the screen, that'd be convenient.

BTW, playing DOS version of Secret of Monkey Island, I need to wait through the intro every time before I can load my saved game. I don't know if that's unavoidable, but it'd be great if saves could be loaded during the intro and even the initial Lucas Arts logo screen. Though, I know I can also just load a saved game from the SCUMMVM launcher.

A shortcut to bring up the Global Main Menu (GMM, ScummVM's menu) is to long-press on the System Back Navigation button. You'll have to set your device to use a three button navigation mode for that. On some newer devices this may no longer work though (It does not on my Android 15 phone).

The other option is to set a custom keymap for it using the ScummVM keymapper. Go through Global Options -> Keymaps and set a new shortcut for the "Global Main Menu" action using the keyboard overlay (eg. Ctrl+F5, as cumbersome as that might be to achieve). To bring up the keyboard overlay on-demand in ScummVM, when the on-screen controls are hidden, you can perform the gesture of tapping three fingers and hold down (all three) for a couple of seconds, then raising them off the screen.

(Very very) Old devices may have a System Menu button, which would also bring up the ScummVM GMM (though I don't think I have tested that recently).

I also have this problem. I have a 4:3 Android handheld and that touch overlay in the top right corner is ugly and overlaps my game graphics, so I have to turn it off! But then I cannot open the menu that shows "Return to Launcher" anymore.

I found an easy solution:
In the main ScummVM menu:
- go to Global Options->Keymaps
- click on the red button labeled "Menu" next to "Global Main Menu"
- press the Start button on your controller
- click Apply and Ok

Now the Start button on your controller should open the Menu in all games. At least it does for me.

This would be a good default setting, I think.

This should be now part of the default keymaps for this action in the platform, as of this commit:

Thank you for the suggestion :)
