Need hints for Grim Fandango

I'm playing through Grim Fandango for the first time, and I've having trouble figuring out how to win the cat races. I've already figured out that I need to pick Tuesday on the second week, but I don't know how to figure out which race is the right one without using trial-and-error. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

I don't remember right now, but all hints are there in the game, I'm sure.

I figured it out, and it seemed to be a matter of the interface getting in the way. I was trying to show a note to a character talking on a telephone, but the game thought I was trying to use the note on the telephone instead.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that next time.
