I haven't played the game in a while, but from what I remember you don't need any mugs until after the trials.

You'll need something from him for one of the trials, but you don't need to release him yet.

Hey, I'm also enjoying Monkey Island on my P1i, but I was wondering, do you know how to bring up the menu so you can save the game?

At the loading screen i went to "options -> paths -> keys" and remapped "6. save" with a key so i was able to enter the meu during the game.

Otherwise confirm/jogdial in is = F5 , save by default.

Actually, no. You need them only to free Otis, whom you'll only need to free when you're gonna be <spoiler removed>, and that won't happen until after <spoiler removed> and that happens only after you complete all three trials.
