Monkey Island 1: CD Audio Tracks get played incorrectly...

Post by VuurVos »

Hi All!

I've been following ScummVM for quite some time now and really love it so much, that I've started to collect all the games it supports. With this in mind i purchased a used copy of Monkey Island 1 today and am presented with a problem that I can't seem to fix, here goes:

My CD (I think it's the international version, it has 5 languages available on it and the CD says it's "Manufactured by Creative Technology under license from Software Toolworks Inc.") contains just 18 CD Audio tracks, but using the search on the forum I found that most people here talk about 24 audio tracks for Monkey Island 1.

Hence the problem i'm having is that the game plays the wrong audiotrack at the wrong time (or doesn't play anything at all). This is already apparent at the intro when i hear some background noise (birds, wind, etc.) instead of the regular opening theme.

The other strange thing i notice is that there is one unusually long audio track on my CD, track8 that lasts 13 min. 13 sec. and when i rename my audio files from the last track, in my case being track18, to track24, track 17 to 23, 16 to 22, etc. Those tracks are in their right place i.e. track11 becomes track17 and thus the intro plays correctly.

I suspect that i either have:

1> a very special version of CD, that no-one else has... (anybody intrested in swapping/buying :D then, i just want to play the game)

2> Track8 on my CD is actually a couple of tracks in other versions of the game that have been combined, for whatever reason, into one and i have to split it.

Sorry for typing so much on this, but hopefully it clarifies the problem. Can anybody tell me what to do about this, or do i have to find another copy with 24 Audio tracks :(

Thanks!

EDIT:

I just booted up the .EXE on the CD, which launches a Monkey Island menu on the disc made my Software Toolworks Inc. where i select the language in which to play the game. When i select English, it also plays the wrong tracks...

Hmmm, I don't know what to say but I think you may a special special CD ..... i.e. a misprint/mispress of some sort!

Perhaps you could rip the audio tracks to (bad quality, as to not get in trouble) mp3's. Then send them to someone who has the 'right' CD, and let them see if perhaps the tracks are just numbered differently but contain the same basic data..

Just a suggestion from a layman though.

You could try to rip it as one big wave file and mount it with the cue sheet from that version:

Code: Select all

FILE "<Filename>.iso" BINARY
  TRACK 01 MODEx/2xxx
FILE "Range.wav" WAVE
  TRACK 02 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
  TRACK 03 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 02:01:01
  TRACK 04 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 04:06:44
  TRACK 05 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 06:11:72
  TRACK 06 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 08:07:52
  TRACK 07 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 10:15:27
  TRACK 08 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 10:27:62
  TRACK 09 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 11:38:45
  TRACK 10 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 13:58:14
  TRACK 11 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 16:02:38
  TRACK 12 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 17:36:26
  TRACK 13 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 19:55:44
  TRACK 14 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 21:58:71
  TRACK 15 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 22:17:12
  TRACK 16 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 24:54:30
  TRACK 17 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 27:23:58
  TRACK 18 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 31:06:08
  TRACK 19 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 33:45:56
  TRACK 20 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 36:22:03
  TRACK 21 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 36:39:20
  TRACK 22 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 36:56:17
  TRACK 23 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 39:11:24
  TRACK 24 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 41:35:47
  TRACK 25 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 43:50:50
Created with EAC.
You can mount it with Daemon Tools and then rip it again with your favourite tool.

Thanks guys, however when i tried to used the cue-sheet listed above and reripped te audiotracks, they where still incorrect, so i did it the "less than honest way  " and acquired the audio tracks from somewhere else. Stranger even is that when i listen to the correct tracks they actually sound different from the ones i have!

Anyway, i found a workable solution and i'm gonna keep my eyes open for a good copy :(

Alternative three: Your CD is damaged, which is why the track stop/start marks are not read correctly... ?

That wouldn't explain the Tracks sounding different though.

It doesn't seem the disc is damaged, as I can rip it perfectly fine. It looks like it's been mastered with a wrong TOC...

I heared of that problem before. Seems there really was sould a missprinted version at some point. (Unless that one was a faulty bootleg. I don't know.)
You should ask the distributor for your country for a replacement CD.

Hello,

Sorry for the response to this very old message.
I just received the multilingual CD version made by "Software Toolworks Inc.", and I have a similar problem.
I have 18 audio tracks, track 14 is merged with tracks 15 to 20 ...
When I run the game in dosbox the wrong track is played.
I can rip the cd without problem ...
It's possible to create an corrected iso ?

Very confusing with this game.
I have other French versions of the game in a bundle with MI2. One has the audio tracks, the second does not ... Found some information according to which some editions are bugged ...

Best regards

I recently bought a SOMI Enhanced CD from the Netherlands and it has the same problem!
It's also the version from Creative Technology (probably a OEM version that came with soundcards).

Good to see there are others and it's not me alone being that unlucky! :D

For reference i archived this version on Archive.org with upfront indicators that it is a bad version with mastering errors regarding the audio tracks.

All the best,
