Gabriel Knight 1: restoring savegame is impossible.

Post by vanfanel »

Hi there!

Using latest .DEB version of Scummvm, 2.2.0 as of this writting. Also tried stock Ubuntu version, which is currently 2.1.0.
I have tried on both X86_64 and ARM aarch64.

I have been using Scummvm for years, and I have never encountered this bug with any other game.

With the GOG version of GK1, I can save the game but I can not restore it. The engine says: The game was saved under a different game or interpreter version.

With my own spanish CD copy, it says the same, except... well, in spanish.

I can also see this on the console:

WARNING: Save game was created for game version 4U, but the current game version is IɮU!

Version numbers look like that. Any idea on what could be happening here?
The game is listed as supported.

Thanks!

Looks like a bug. Could you please submit a bugreport and attach the savefile?

Hi Sev!

Thanks for answering.
I created an issue ticket here, as instructed, with an attached savefile:

I was able to reproduce the problem (or at least cause a very similar one) by removing the file called VERSION from my game. I guess ScummVM writes the information from that file to the savegame, but if it's missing it just writes random garbage there instead.

I guess VERSION is a necessary file, but I didn't see any warning about it missing when I started the game. Which seems unfortunate. I don't know if the old savegames can be salvaged or not.

I've written about my findings on the bug report.

It seems that manually creating the VERSION file works.
Maybe Scummvm should warn about the missing file at start, so this bug doesnt get the player later, unsuspectedly,
