Are the "Supported Games" in the Wiki the only games that run?

Post by wad11656 »

I would like Backyard Soccer and Jumpstart Preschool (1999) on my Scummvm emulator. They are not under the "Supported Games" list on the Wiki. When I tried to add Jumpstart Preschool, Scummvm couldn't find a game, even though it says at the bottom of this page that its engine may be supported.

Do games have to be explicitly coded into the emulator by the developers in order for them to work (and then added to the "Supported Games" list), or are there "hack" ways to get potentially working games running?

Firstly, ScummVM is not an emulator in that sense. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScummVM#Features for a background on this, so yes each game needs work to support i.e. we are _not_ emulating a platform such as MS-DOS (as per DOSBox).

There are always a few more games in the codebase than on the "supported games" list... but these are mostly Work in Progress (sometimes for many years) so not enabled on release builds. To try these, you will need to download the nightly / development testing builds from our downloads page.

Looking at the two games you mention, Backyard Soccer may be supported by SCUMM/HE engine in future as it shares a lot of code with other "Backyard" titles, but not yet supported... We are open source, if you are a C/C++ developer, feel free to take a look at the code and submit a Pull Request:

Jump Preschool could be supported in future, but this is a COMPOSER engine V4 game, and the existing Composer engine only supports V1 and V2 games:
