Saving in Humongous Titles

I recently purchased a Pandigital E-Reader. It is also an Android tablet and I was able to install ScummVM on it. I have put all the Putt Putt and Freddie Fish games on an SD card for my youngest to play. And it works great, except I cannot figure out how to save a game. I have tried the official 1.2.1 version, an experimental 1.3 version. I have tried pressing F5 on the virtual keyboard. I have tried pressing Alt-1 on the virtual keyboard. I have tried using the root, a save folder in root, a save folder in the game directory. None of them work. The save and load buttons are not clickable and the autosaves don't seem to work.

Am I missing something? I see other messages about saving so it should be possible. The version of android on this tablet is 2.0, I believe.

i think there was a way in 1.2.1
with a nightly build function keys are currently unmapped (ideas?)
