For the last one, it's such a pity that it is so incomplete/buggy, though it is completable.

I'll be happy to hear about your favourites and your thoughts, too. If you don't want to, you don't need to provide URLs (we all know how to use google).

Are adventures which were formerly sold commercially allowed in this list? There are quite some which were officially released as freeware later.

Of course, formerly commercial titles are allowed, too.

Right now, I am missing Zak McKracken between time and space.

I once tried "Zak McKracken - Between Time and Space". I didn't get it to work, it crashed right after the beginning and no solution helped. This problem persists with many different configurations... Also, as far as I know, there's no english translation yet.

It's a pity, as the game itself does look very good.

It's been too long since I played a freeware adventure game outside of ScummVM, but back then I quite liked Andrew Plotkin's Spider And Web. (It's a text adventure though, which may frighten some people off.)

I've never tried the Zak game. I think I was put off by the size, not far off 2GB, and no English translation. Also I couldn't find any details about options like if it includes English subtitles.
In a top 10 freeware I think I'd include Broken Sword 2.5.
Even though it was a German release they said it had English subtitles and the game fits onto a CD. If I recall the download comes as a CD image. Besides that I can speak Dutch which I find helps with German.
This reminded me that the team had said they were going to make an English version. I just read a post on their site put up on the 14th March.

"After the release of the game, we haven't stopped working on it. In fact, we've prepared several additional language packages and the English voices are on their way. What is more, all of the characters already have their actors, just not all of them are fully recorded yet."
"Šarunas Ledas with the help of Dennis Keighron have chosen great voices, including very convincing ones for George (Stan Burdman) and Nico (Maggie Nolan)! We believe that all of you will love them, because not only are they very fitting, but also truly similar to the original voices of the main characters. So, keep waiting for the full English version, because it's not too long until it's out. In the meantime, you can listen to the dialogue of George and Nico, that has been accidentally recorded in Nico's answering machine."

If you go to the site those last 2 words from that post (answering machine) are a mp3 link.

Speaking of which, one of my favourite freeware IF would be Blue Chairs.

Another fairly good freeware adventure game is 'A Tale of Two Kingdoms'. http://www.crystalshard.net/atotk.php
