Freeware - it means every Verison is free ??

uhm ..

as example BASS .. is released as freeware , right ?

i can play this in german , if i cahnge the Language in ScummVM

but the speech is in english ..

there resulting 2 questions :

exist an german speech Version ?

and is this ersion also Freeware ??

FOTAQ is on youre page only in English aviable , if i can get an german Version , is this also freeware ? (same question like the secound above)

no, there is no German talkie version for BASS.

I don't know what the status for FOTAQ is.

is okay , but the game has german Language support .. thats why i'm wondering

My main ask is .. if the original Version (first (mostly english) Release) is set for free . angd legal to copy , will it takes for all version (other languages)

The answer is: No, not necessarily.

Only if it is explicitly stated that ALL version are free are ALL versions free..

This is so for various reasons, one being that in some cases, multiple companies hold (partial) copyright claims for localized versions of a game. So even if the original creator is OK with making the game freeware, doing the same for localized versions may require the permission of whatever company produced the localized version.

I've read about a German FOTAQ talkie version which was made for the German magazine "Bravo SCREENFUN". The readme of this version declared it as freeware:

weird enough, this is the readme which comes with the english FOTAQ datafile - I'm not sure if Bravo is the leading authority in that kind of questions

My guess is that they just packaged those files together.

Legality of game localizations should be carefully investigated before making any assumptions. As John once said, some of companies who translated the games returned rights back to them however some aren't. I.e. when some company translates a game or makes a port, it shares copyright on this new derivative work. And it may happen that they do not want it to be free today.

Best thing would be to investigate it with John directly, but he is such a busy man.

I haven't been able to get an answer from John about exactly what translations we can use. Basically, I was supposed to have been sent a disk with the languages that we could use (sevs explained why only some can be used)... but that never happened :)

I completely forgot about the covermount deal with Bravo Screenfun, but that is an 'officially' repacked copy of FOTAQ. Now that I'm reminded, the German translation was one that was going to be sent to us.

That status of other languages, I don't know. The translation issue was talked about verbally with John, so I don't really have anything in writing, making things trickier.
