Simon the Sorcerer 1 CD dialogue

Post by andwan0 » Fri May 30, 2014 11:23 am

I did a forum search and couldn't find anything regarding dialogue/text.

I read somewhere that Simon the Sorcerer 1 CD doesn't support dialogue/text.

Just curious whether it's possible to hack it to use the dialogue from the non-CD version of the game? I like to read the dialogue at the same time as listening to the speech.

Hmm... Nothing specific about this in the relevant parts of the Wiki either:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/AGOS
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Simon_the_Sorcerer
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/AGOS/Bugs
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/AGOS/TODO

Will check the AGOS engine source code and history.

Hmmm. It appears that AGOS implements subtitles using opcodes from the scripts and the English and German versions of Simon1 did not include full subtitle data. Rather than show broken subtitles, these are disabled (I think as per the original):

https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob ... 1.cpp#L335

https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob ... s.cpp#L664

If you can compile locally then removing that line which disables the _subtitles flag; would allow you to enable this in the configuration file using the "subtitles" boolean, but your mileage will vary.

As for merging the floppy datafiles with the CD datafiles, this is probably very hard to pretty much impossible due to the complexity of modifying the original script code and merging. *SHRUG*

The English & German versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 (CD) removed many subtitles, and even the string ids in the scripts for those subtitles. It would be a huge task to restore the missing subtitles, since the game scripts would need to be updated too.

If you hack code to enable subtitles, you will still notice many subtitles missing. Some examples are the reading of the letter at the start, or the dog barking.
