You can get used to the controls on the PSP, at least it has analogue controls. However, it still doesn't come close to the touch screen. I doubt current computers have any problems with 2D-gfx output while playing compressed audio in the background I usually have 5+ programs running under windows while listening to music and I never get slowdowns. I always wondered about performance impact that comes from compressing the files. So far I only had MI1 compressed with no trouble so it seems to me that compression is not an issue for the earlier games (MP3 decoding shouldn't take away that much power from the PSP). I always thought of these games to be ideal candidates for ScummVM. Very nice efforts, Future Wars alreadys plays fine. I'm in the process of getting a new phone - and it needs to have support for ScummVM :) My choice would be the Sony P910i because of the touchscreen.
