Feel free, if it sounds interesting. A couple of things I would worry about are the memory taken up by the module's symbol table, and I would avoid using position independent code, as it will cause a speed penalty. Sounds like a tricky job, but the dreamcast elf loader looks quite straightforward. ...

Did you try the compressed NTFS solution?
It should buy you space the same way than ZIP does.

Re: Transparent ZIP access?

By the way the rationale behind not supporting this is probably: Old games are small enough. Newer games (talkies) have big files with highly compressible sounds pack : if you compress those with OGG or MP3, ZIPing won't buy you much anyway. If you don't, ZIP will compress much less than lossy compr...

Re: Transparent ZIP access?

You should specify which OS, though you're probably asking for Windows flavours.

I wouldn't hesitate to ditch it if I were you because there is a DLDI way to do quite the same thing through FCSR.
Okay you lose the zipping and the saving but who needs saving anyway... Erm.
Let's wait for somebody else to add SRAM write support to FCSR. That's the whole point of DLDI anyway :)

Nope.
What is exciting is if we can ditch additional non-DLDI support :)

By the way Simon, I'm very impressed by Cybil.
Is it a one-man project?
Why did you choose MIPS? Sentimental decision? :)

We're talking about stupid legalese stuff, not about technical considerations :)

If the only legal way is to provide:
a) code that decompresses the original MONSTER.SOU
b) WAV files that override some of the sounds
c) code that regenerates the new MONSTER.SOU

then why not!

But redistributing a binary patch that only contains the modifications should be legal enough, I guess.

In fact we don't ;)
