The background artworks are among the best I've ever seen in a pixel-style adventure game, honestly. It all seems very three-dimensional despite the low resolution. I also love the fact that the artist seemed to like hiding faces all over the place.

How "low-end" are we talking? I mean even the $5 Raspberry Pi zero has 512 MB which is plenty and that's about as low-end as you can get.

Have to disagree with your assessment of the remastered edition. Newly recorded score, improved sound and FMV quality, massively better controls, and much better 3D. Right now all of this is not more than tossing around ideas anyway. I'm no developer, so there needs to be a dev who's actually interested in working on stuff like this. This includes swapping out the original backgrounds either with cleaned up ones (at the same resolution, but a higher color depth...
