PSP DOTT Can't swap charaters

Hi,
New here and can't seem to find any info this.
I'm running Day of the Tentacle on the PSP, but I have a problem. I don't see anyway of switching from one character to another! I'm stuck with Bernard and no way to get to Hoagie or the girl. Their little picture icons are gone!

Can anyone help???

I know this is a stupid question...but it has to be asked. You HAVE gotten to the point in the game where it's possible to switch characters, right? You have to find the plans for the Super Battery before you can switch to Hoagie, and then the Kumquat tree has to be disposed of before you can play as Laverne.
