multiple ScummVM versions

Post by glokidd »

Hello all, congrats on 0.8.1

I was wondering if it was possible to run 2 different versions of ScummVM on the same comp, ie. 0.7.1 and 0.8.1. is it a scummvm.ini thing or is it just a bad idea to do this?
i use win xp, me, and 98se

install them in different directories, then either use a commandline switch to let each have its own ini, or just let them both use the same ini file in C:\windows\scummvm.ini - I don't think anything radical changed in the ini, so it'll prolly still work

not sure if the savegames of 0.7.1 and 0.8.1 are fully compatible though

why do you want to keep using 0.7.1 anyways?

Neither saves nor scummvm.ini are backwards compatible. So to let them both run, you should force one of them to use local config file.

thanks clem, ill try it out
The main reason i still use 0.7.1 is game id tags (monkey1, monkeyEGA/VGA, zaktowns etc) its a handy quick reference for my 0.7.* palmos version as im often by my comp when initially adding games. Additionally i am currently playing several games (COMI, Dig, fotaq, and sam n max currently on this[WinXp] comp) so savegame compatibility is an issue. I do use other versions though. On my WinMe comp (currently downed with bootsector worms arrgh)i use 0.8.0, same with my 98se (at least untill i check 0.8.1 out)

thanks for the reply
Ill use the search function to find out how to do the comand line swiitch :)

ok thanks sev i must have been typing that when you posted. I did a search for scummvm.ini and got 1580 hits, i tried to whittle it down with addidional search option (general forums, help and support) but it didnt seem to work.
So say i was going to put version 0.8.1 in the following folder
C:\amgames\scummvm81\
and made a shortcut of scummvm.exe
how would i need to adjust the shortcuts target to force a local configuration file

Excerpt from ScummVM README:
-c, --config=CONFIG Use alternate configuration file
I.e. either '-c your_dir' or '--config=your_dir'.

And the fun thing is that we're on a really long way to ScummVM 8.1.

ok i tried a shortcut with:
C:\amgames\scummvm81\scummvm.exe -c C:\amgames\scummvm81\
as its target, and when i opened scummvm i got a list of the games i have added in my 0.7.1, so what stupid thing am i doing?

p.s. 0.8.1, 0.8.1, 0.8.1 there hopefully this gets me over this wierd block i have with version numbers :)

[edit]
i also tried
C:\amgames\scummvm81\scummvm.exe -c \amgames\scummvm81\
and had the same problem, im using the zipfile.

Try -c C:\amgames\scummvm81\scummvm.ini

thanks ender, i gave it a shot
unfortuneatly it still comes up with my 0.7.1 game list, maybe i should wipeout my original scummvm.ini in /windows/wherever/ and then try to force 0.8.1 to generate a new one useing local configs. or maybe ive just gone about this all wrong.
