Playing Monkey Island SE on ScummVM!

Post by billwashere »

Well not really. Just playing the old version from in the game (available by using F10)

Information from http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.p ... did=199164

1 ) Buy Monkey Island SE
2 ) Download for Windows http://helicoid.de/scumm/extractpak.zip or sources http://slexy.org/view/s21wNL2X3x (thanks to jott)
3 ) Download http://helicoid.de/scumm/unxwb-mi.zip (Includes sources)
4 ) Download xWMAEncode http://www.enbclan.com/download.php?f=/ ... Encode.zip (Windows only! Try wine!)
5 ) Extract Monkey1.pak using extractpak (Now you have Secret of Monkey Island CD Version in the folder \clasic\en\. You can add this to scummvm now and play it but it has no sound)
6 ) Extract MusicOriginal.xwb in the audio folder using unxmb
7 ) Now convert xma files to wav using xWMAEncode
8 ) Convert wav files to either MP3 or flac or ogg (If you don't know how to do this search google)
9 ) Files your files in the same directory as the monkey1.001 and monkey.000
10 ) TODO: Files are in the wrong order but will play.

track7 becomes track6
track18 becomes track17
track23 becomes track22

Well That's It. Yes Instead of MusicOriginal.xwb you could extract MusicNew.xwb for the new music.

EDIT: (WINDOWS ONLY )There is a bat file that will automatically extract and convert the files for you if you have the programs in the folder. http://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?p=54790#54790

Looks like there's 3 apps here in 2, 3 and 4.
2 and 3 have source available and 4 - try Wine.

To quote "MI:SE isn't available foe Linux anyway."
I don't think it matters.

I suppose this will not be officially supported for the same reasons as why ScummVM will not support the other steam versions?

Shouldn't think so, not until LucasArts says it's ok or in the future when it's clear they don't plan to supports other platforms besides Windows & iPhone.

But I guess you could go one stage further with this and also extract the voices and insert them into the original with scummspeaks (but you'll need the hacks made for the Speech Project)

As luck would have it, we're working on that exact project over at LucasForums (check out the link in my sig).

Yes there are 3 programs needed.

I'm with Red_Breast and there is a large part of ScummVM users are linux based, so it is only fair that I included them as well.

Not quite sure if steam works in steam using wine. Steam also has a Direct2Drive. This allows users the play programs without the use of steam.

If someone knows how to modify SCUMMVM source to be compatible with the new version(the new textures and new sounds), please post the details of how to change the source, if not here then on another website. Some of us have paid for the game but run Linux or other operating systems and do not wish to attempt to run the game through Wine.

Apparently it's a 5 minute hack. I can understand that the SCUMMVM team do not want to step on LucasArts' toes but there is no reason an unofficial patch, not connected to the SCUMMVM team, could be used. I see no moral issues with it as it doesn't hurt LucasArts since the game is already released on torrent sites, it just allows people on other platforms to experience the game and could even boost sales for LucasArts.

Have you seen the sea waves, LeChucks ghostly afterglow and the lava hot air?
Well, the tech used to make that happen is called pixel shades.
Pixel shader effects require you to have a somewhat modern 3D graphics card and are outside the scope of ScummVM.
It would be very VERY hard/impossible to bring pixel shades to all the platforms that ScummVM supports.
MI1SE _may_ be supported by the Residual project at some point in the future, but Residual is very much a work-in-progress.

Then, there is the legal stuff you already mentioned....

If there was any reference to a five-minute hack, it was probably about the Steam re-releases of the older games (The Dig, etc.), or extracting the original version (256 colour graphics, no voices) of The Secret of Monkey Island from the special edition.

I don't think anyone has said that supporting the special edition would be that easy.

@dbzdeath

There is a project to include speech into the old game. They are getting ready for a test

Code: Select all

http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=199288
Replacing the backgrounds/sprites is a different thing. By the moment, at least til end of summer, ScummVM doesn't support 16 bit graphics so imagine to get textures working!

Which predates the MI:SE release. So I wonder how it comes that people think what's said there applies to the MI:SE too.

you know someone reads it, post it somewhere. Another one reads it, assume that MISE is the same stuff and you got it...

Though it would be lovelly to get MISE in ScummVM, though whithout pixelshaders and stuff like that. Speech, sprites and backgrounds... :)

??? I think you mean SMI:SE. Steam works fine in Wine and Steam has nothing to do with Direct2Drive.

Well steam is known to work with wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=1554

I've never used it so I can't tell you anymore, I'm not keen on that sort of system I prefer a hard copy of my games.
