BASS completely liberated (?)

Post by cappuchok »

It seems that Beneath a Steel Sky has now been completely liberated, meaning that both data files, original DOS executables and full source code are now publicly available for free.

The announcement (sort of) was apparently made here: http://www.liberatedgames.com/forums/in ... 0&goto=409

THIS IS JUST WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!!!

Thank you VERY VERY much!

I just can't stand DOS-Games without DOS-Executables.

I very much appreciate the liberty of playing the game in DOS AND ScummVM.

Best regards!

Another question regarding BASS:

Was there ever a Version 1.1 available for download from ScummVM?

Because until 11/1/2005 you could download bass-cd.zip, and now you can download bass-cd-1.2.zip

Anyone knows the exact version history??

Best regards

bass-cd-1.1.zip was same bass-cd.zip just with new license attached. Then we decided to use this opportunity to publish latest known CD version and 1.2 was born. So to create 1.1 get old sky.dsk and combine it with new readme.txt from 1.2, i.e. nothing new.

You should be aware though that the .EXE and .RST also have different versions, depending on the used .DSK and .DNR.
Don't mix them up....

Besides, BASS always was completely free. We just decided that we don't want to release the original .EXE because we didn't want to confuse any users.

actually I remember quite some discussion whether or not the .EXE was free to distribute as well on the old sf.net boards

Anyways, it really would have been nice from ScummVM to include the complete CD.

You also include the exes of the demos and even the exps from the FMTOWNS demos for example.

I can't see your concerns here.

It would have really been nice to see a full version by ScummVM out there, because for me ScummVM simply stands for the quality and the safety of the download.

Best regards

It's probably not legal to redistribute the FM-TOWNS demo files.

How come? Demos are form of advertisement. Want to pay for ads? :D

Google is paying for ads too so why shouldn't we?

What I mean is that everything depends on the license those products were contributed on, so if this license says that this demo is to be contributed between 2000 and 2001 that's the way the license handles it.
Even demos can have different licenses!

What is your point? Should we remove all demos from our site? Or you're just trolling?

You shouldn't take him too serious.

He admits it here:

What I intended to say is that demos can have different licenses too, and that's what I posted above!

BTW: ScummVM <-> Original EXEs

Is there any possibility that someone could write a "savegame converter", i.e. that I could play on an oldskool PC at home under DOS 6.2 but later get the savegames on a USB stick for use on a modern ScummVM laptop?

Or are the ScummVM savegames (or the originals for that matter) much of a hack, and it would be quite enormous work to do something like that?! :?:
