Foreign fonts in WME (and other) games

I have a question, as something is really puzzling me.

On playing Chivalry is Not dead i get a
WARNING: fonts\ALEAWB__.TTF has no replacement font yet, using FreeSans for now (if available)!
I do have that exact font in themes/fonts/ and i know from a local I/O sniffer that it gets locked succesfully by ScummVM.
So why is ScummVM not simply using it, if found, instead of relying on FreeSans (even if not available?)

Or am i understanding something wrong here?

The fonts/ directory is supposed to be inside the game data directory, not themes/ (the engine looks for files relative to the game data directory).
