How do you download and run the freeware games on ScummVM?

ScummVM README could enlighten you, or the User Manual. It is hard to help more with the information you provided.

Thanks, the problem is that when I try to download the freeware games they are all audio files and I can't choose them using the add game button

Which game is that? For some game (Drascula for example) music and additional languages are distributed as add-ons, which means you need to download the base package as well (for example the game in English).

Also note that Broken Sword, Broken Sword II, Elvira 2 and The Feeble Files are not available for free. We only provide add-ons and to play those games you need to buy them (for example from GOG.com).

Hello, sorry for taking so long to get back.
I am trying to download the freeware games (e.g. flight of the amazon queen and beneath a steel sky) but Whenever I click the freeware version it tries to download as an audio file that I can't add to Scumm

So for example for Beneath a Steel Sky when you try to get one of the two files at http://www.scummvm.org/games/#sky, which are zip-compressed archives of the floppy and CD version respectivel, instead of getting bass-cd-1.2.zip or BASS-Floppy-1.3.zip you get an audio file? What is the name of the file?
