Hex Editor with Maniac Mansion NES

Hey I'm new here and I'm not entirely sure about this. I was told to use a hex editor to help get Maniac Mansion NES to work on ScummVM. Problem is, i've never used Hex Editor so don't really understand the instructions. Can someone help me through this or provide a visual guide?
