I'm wanting to develop my own SCUMM style engine for the Sega Mega Drive. I figured the best way of doing this would be firstly to understand how the datafile files in these games work.
Given the MD's restricted 61 colours, I'd like to take a look at some of the earlier EGA games that use 16 colours as a starting point.

Is there a specific piece of software I can use to view these files and get a general feel for how the data inside them directs how the files are used by the engine?
Any help would really be gratefully received!
