In the Summertime

Almost six weeks ago, we announced you that ScummVM has been accepted by Google for its Google Summer of Code 2012. Since then, we received many good applications and we asked a lot of efforts to the students to clarify and enhance theirs. We'd like to thank them all for all these efforts!

Yesterday, Google announced the list of accepted students and tasks per project and it's with great joy that we announce you that this year, 4 students will be working on ScummVM tasks:

  • Jakimushka will work on a new testing framework based on an event recorder/player
  • Singron will turn scalers into plugins and will add some new ones
  • Somaen will integrate the Wintermute Lite engine and will add some currently missing functionalities
  • Upthorn will work on a new save anywhere feature, per engine, particularly useful for mobile devices

We'd like to welcome them warmly and to wish them the best! And of course, last but not least, we'd like to thank Google for giving us the possibility, once more, to work with talented students during summer time.

WinterMute eh? Does that mean the "fan favorite" Limbo of the Lost might make a ScummVM appearance in the future? lol.

Somaen will work on the Wintermute *Lite* engine. Which means, basically, the 2D part of WME. Looking at the screenshots of this game, I guess it would fit better in ResidualVM as the character looks 3D, and is therefore out of scope for his task.

And btw, the game is not too difficult to find, despite its short commercial life Wink

Coming from the wintermute world I'm very excited about a specific feature of this list Very Happy Allow me to nitpick a little bit. The engine is called "Wintermute" and not "WinterMute". Also the best & funnier plagiarism in the game history (limbo of the lost) is 2D only. The character is just prerendered frames so many new players will get the chance to appreciate it. Cool

EDIT: Silly mistakes.

Then, if it's 2D only... Yes, it's in the scope of somaen's task Smile

Limbo of the Lost is a 2d game that used screenshots of 3d games (such as thief) to make backgrounds. It is absolute crap and will only be remembered as such (that and the absolutely horrible ending song, lol).
