DISCORD server for ScummVM

Post by Playaveli »

Hey everybody,

been using ScummVM since god knows when... :) Have been a long time lurker on these boards.

Together with some other guys I run a website for SWOS (Sensible World of Soccer), and we've been using IRC for a long time... and it died slowly...
So, we decided to move on and use DISCORD for our community (which has been a very good decision and a boost in activity of our online leagues etc...)

I've opened a server for ScummVM.
Head over here: https://discord.gg/kMA9puE

If members of the staff/admin-team join, I'll happily hand over control!

CU!

PS: Discord is completely free (and ad-free, no personal data requested). It can be used by browser, program, mobile app! https://discordapp.com

I'm reviving this suggestion from @Playaveli after trying Discord for accessing another retro gaming community with very nice results, what do you think @Digitall, @Criezy and @Sev?

I created a ScummVM server here: https://discord.gg/dtpUUnn

I'll give control if you think it's a good idea :D

For those not aware:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discord_(software)

I think the point here is that while freeware (as in beer), Discord is proprietary and thus not free as in software... which tends to conflict with the FOSS intent of the project.

To be honest, I have used ICQ, AOL Messenger and many many other systems for IM which have been and gone, and IRC is still here, warts and all and chugging along :)

Also, most of the development team are already pretty busy so I doubt they have the time to be present in our FB groups, Whatsapp, Signal or other latest IM product... but if users want to use it to discuss games, then nothing stopping this.

Also note that Mataniko created a proof of concept for integration with Discord (you can see it here: https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/pull/1247), which I assume means there might be some interest from him at least.

That looks really cool Criezy!
I also use Telegram quite frequently, I joined Discord just a week ago, when Playaveli proposed Discord I thought it would be a great idea for feedback or game discussion as sometimes IRC is seen as a more "power user" tool.
Just my 2 cents.
Whatever works best for you guys, it's true that the forums and IRC are still there, just wondering if it's worth trying something new to give the project more exposure :D
