I stumbled over the Dune 1 integration efforts

Post by bert3 »

Just for preserving reasons:

http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Cryo

Some sort of Cryo fork for Dune 1
https://github.com/elyosh/scummvm-cryo
targeting only Dune 1, decompression, music, sentence and sprite loading seems to work, no gameplay at all, only a test-console able to load(play) the game resources

https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/tree ... gines/cryo
currently targeting "Lost Eden" only, playable according to the scummvm wiki

would it make sense to integrate the Dune 1 stuff into the mainline cryo engine? or are the games too different or should the Dune 1 part more evolve before integration?

In my opinion, it would be okay as long as the games did share some of their code in common, and Dune 1 didn't add too much new engine code. There's the precedent in some of the original RPGs being added, like Lands of Lore and Eye of the Beholder, because they shared engine code in common. But in the case of Dune 1, it would only be worthwhile if the game were fully implemented. There's less point adding extra code to master, making the engine more complicated, if it's just going to bit-rot.

I kind of have a similar long term goal.. one of these days I'm going to finish implementing the Geekwad games, so the TsAGE engine can truly support all the games using it's engine :)
