Accuracy of FM Towns audio emulation

Post by almeath »

I am wondering about how accurate the FM Towns audio emulation is for games that do not use CD audio tracks, namely Monkey Island 2 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

When I add these games to ScummVM and leave all settings on 'default' it sounds like Adlib music is being used. When I specifically select FM Towns audio, the music basically sounds horrible in both games. Lots of high pitched squeaks and squawks and everything sounds badly out of tune.

I should add that I have never owned an FM Towns system. I obtained some of the CDs, but I have no way of testing them in a 'real' environment.

I found this discussion from over a decade ago that addresses the same issue.

I gather that the YM-2612 was just not well suited to handling the MIDI soundtracks for these games, and so it will not sound that great in either ScummVM or other emulators when compared to Adlib music.

Other FM Towns games use CD tracks for the music but that was obviously not going to work for the transitions required by the iMuse system, so these two games were the odd ones out.
