DOTT Remaster and Full Throttle Remaster Ultimate Talkies?

Post by elvisish »

I love the high-quality voices on the Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle re-releases, but DOTT has an annoying in-game menu for saving/loading and pausing, and Full Throttle isn't pixel-crisp and has some bilinear smoothing on the pixels. Could some genius put together a batch file to take the legally owned copies of DOTT and FT Remaster and gather the high-quality voices so it would work in ScummVM?

It seems possible... do you mean speech (I don't think it's in higher quality), SFX or music?

The speech is higher quality. It's taken directly from the original DAT tapes.

Update:
I have managed to build monster.so3 (SFX + Speech) with the high quality sounds from DOTT remastered (and lip sync tags extracted from original SOU).
It works and sounds great in ScummVM.
Still need to automate the build proccess.

FT is coming along too...
Should require a quite different process to include the audio from the cutscenes as well.
This shouldn't be too hard, scummvm-tools has already got the right tool for the job.

Another update:
Build script for DOTT is ready (DOTT reMONSTERed)!
You can find it along with instructions here: https://github.com/BLooperZ/remonstered

Fantastic work! Thanks for your efforts!

About FT: are you going to convert only the voices or also the music?

Slightly off topic: it would be nice to try to do the same thing for Grim Fandango and ResidualVM...

Just tried the script... MP3 and OGG work flawlessly, but when I use FLAC generated file ScummVM 2.1.0 hangs just before playing the first sound effect...

Thank you for testing it.
I have tried the FLAC version with ScummVM 2.1.0 (Official x64 build on Windows 10) and it works, so I couldn't reproduce this error.
Can you please provide more information of the system you have tried running with (which OS, which ScummVM build, which ffmpeg build)?
(or maybe another try will work?)

about FT:
It's seems the fsb index for speech is little messed up, I am having trouble finding just 1 last audio clip (when ben says 'Corley Motors').
(When extracted with DoubleFine explorer, one can find english speech in some french and italian files, it might be there)
Cutscenes' audio can be extracted and put as is with compressed (with scummvm-tools) SAN files, so music in cutscenes is available.
Haven't checked about the SFX or in-game music yet.

EDIT (missing clip):
In the original version, the recording when ben says 'Corley Motors' and when he says 'Corley Motors! I've been meaning to come here for years!' is the same recording found twice (checked by playing one of them inverted, they also already start at the same time), I'll try cutting it from there.

Grim Fandango will probably not be ready in the near future.

Thanks for your help!

Some infos: Windows 10 Pro 1803 build, ScummVM 2.1.0 32 bit. As for ffmpeg, it was a nightly build... ffmpeg-20191019-ed78ca4-win64-static.zip.

That could be the problem. I am trying again now with the stable build... But the monster.so3 and monster.sog were generated with the same build...

Let me check the stable one.

Ok, the problem was ffmpeg build. 4.2.1 64 bit works perfectly!

Thanks again for your work!

Tried doing the cutscenes manually and discovered ScummVM doesn't like 5.1 OGGs.

EDIT: Made a bug ticket for it.

Many thanks, rzil! I just tested it on a Mac (via Wine) and it works! :D
Btw, would it be possible to do the same with DOTT music as well? In the extracted tenta.cle of the Remastered edition, there is a file called iMUSEClient_Music.fsb – it contains some 400 mp3 files.

Thank you for testing it on Mac.
Regarding music support, I'm afraid it falls under
4.3. Does ScummVM support using MP3/Ogg/FLAC files instead of the original MIDI music?. Anyway it seems to require major changes on ScummVM itself and not just game data.

+SirYodaJedi - Thanks for opening the ticket about 5.1 OGGs.

Ah, I understand. Having a proper HQ speech is more than enough. :D
Thanks again.
