I teach high schoolers locally and want to do a class project where each student builds a game using SCUMM - a whole year project. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place here, but I can't find even rough examples to at least get started educating these students with. Can anyone point me to the right place to find either code samples or a primer on getting started? Thanks in advance

Maybe look at this page on our wiki: http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/HOWTO-Fangames (and in particular at the links toward the bottom of the page).

If you're more interested in your students creating SCUMM-style games and aren't too committed to specifically using SCUMM, I would recommend using Adventure Game Studio (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/)
It has its own documented scripting language and integrated development environment for handling images, animations, sounds, etc. It's free, and a lot of people have been able to create some very impressive adventure games with it (some of which are sold commercially).
