Escumm 0.8.0 crashes UIQ (A1000)

Post by andenand2 »

Hi,
I compressed MONSTER.SOU from Indiana Jones by using oggenc1.1.1 and scumm tools.
I end up with: monster.sog

But escumm just crashes when executing Indiana Jones.
If I downgrade Escumm to 0.7.1, then it doesnt crash but there is still no voice

My A1000 is running Generic firmware (build on original), but I dont think that has anything to do with the matter.

In same "area" then I have Sam & Max that I get sound when using:
- monster.so3 (8 mb - and yes quality sucks then)
But not when using:
- monster.sog (40 mb)

I did not myself compile Sam & Max.

But is it a decoder problem or?

Thanks in advance.

Did you get default 0.8.0 or CVS build? Dafeaut one doesn't have Ogg Vorbis compiled in.

I downloaded the latest from:
http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php under:
"Symbian UIQ binary"

Is that the default one? and if yes, where to get the one that has Vorbis compiled in?

Yes, it's default one. Look below at that page for CVS builds.

Thanks!
Why doesnt the default have all "build-ins".
I actually thought CVS was when things were under "development"

I actually just tried it and it still crashes during "indiana Jones"
And also crashes when trying to run Sam & Max (which it didnt with the 2 previous versions)

I tried with:
scummvm-051108-SymbianUIQ2_all.sis &
scummvm-051108-SymbianUIQ2_all_vorbis.sis

Same results on both

The reason for the default version not having all built in, is because memory restrictions, and that the decoders does n't run out of the box, and there are many reasons for this, one of the biggest has been the filehandling. So it has taken lots of hours to get mp3 working properly, and ogg will require more work, even if it has been compiled in.

As for sound quaility I think that it sounds ok with rather low mp3 bitrates, and as for ogg, well.. even though support has been compiled in, it has n't been tested or debugged yet.

oki thanks for the reply.

So would there be a better way/another compiler that will work if I wanted to compile my Indiana Jones, monster.scu-file?

I think that the default settings for the mp3 compression that ScummVM provides gives rather good results. Ok a monster.sou ends up to be 40-50 mb, but at least that fits on a 128 mb memorycard.

You can always try to change the settings your self, perhaps other users of scummvm has some good experience of what mp3 settings you can use and still have a good enough audio quality.
