Loom Sound Problems (latest SCUMMVM, OSX, PPC)

Post by BENtheTEN »

Hi

after installing SCUMMVM 9.1 on my iBook Loom doesn't play well anymore, there are cracks in the music and sound like every second. I replaced the latest SCUMMVM with the 9.0 ppc edition and it worked again any ideas?
As I also play kyra1 I like using the latest SCUMMVM.

greets
Ben

Hmm, odd. Do the SVN snapshots have the same issue?

Hm, maybe the release binary wasn't built with optimizations turned on, i.e. --enable-release ? Seems unlikely, though

I just double-checked, --enable-release is definately turned on in my build scripts. The only difference in the build process between 0.9 and 0.9.1 is that the 0.9.1 PPC half of the binary was crosscompiled on an Intel box, but that really shouldn't affect performance in any way.

Those of you with this problem: Is Loom the only game that shows worse performance? How is the sound in question encoded?

Yes, that's what I use.

The same thing happens with mi1cd. Both are mp3 compressed.

EDIT: This doesn't happen with ogg compressed music.

Ok!

I've put up two testbuilds to help identify whether this is caused by a codechange, or the changed build process. Regular SVN snapshot location, scummvm-snapshot-ppc-test1.dmg and test2. I'd appreciate if one of you could give them both a test and see if there's any difference :).

Ok, seems like the PPC part has to be built on a PPC machine after all (I've no idea why, a crosscompiled libmad on Intel with all available optimizations still produced the same choppiness).

I'll put up a new 0.9.1a build soon.

Would one of you mind giving http://worldsmainorganization.org/scumm ... macosx.dmg a quick test before I push it to sourceforge? Just to confirm that it runs smoothly on PPC, especially 10.2.8.

Excellent, thanks. The 0.9.1a will hopefully be up on the SF mirrors in a couple of days.

(Oh, and it's identical to the 0.9.1a-rc1 I linked to above, so feel free to stick to that one :) ).
