The daily build seems to be linked against libvpx7 but I've had no problems compiling ScummVM on Debian unstable, where it seems to link against libvpx9 for me.

I think I see now. The function calculates for how many "clock cycles" the message box is displayed, but it's calculating it with the assumption that one second is 20 clock cycles. That may have been true once (several years ago?), but now it appears to be 40.

The bottom of the screen is used for subtitles, if you've installed the subtitle patch that Activision released for it. I don't remember off-hand if it's used for anything else.
